My vote: Battlestar Gallactica

Especially with the announcement yesterday that Battlestar is going to be a series on the SiFi channel and is going into immediate production with new episodes scheduled for late 2004. That announcement could explain the last minute delay that Mongoose is enduring at the moment in making their own announcement - the licensing around these kinds of properties can be ferociously complicated.

1) It has been done 3 times (Original, BS:1980, and the recent SiFi mini series)

2) The biggest uproar in fandom last year was the changes made to the "classic Battlestar" franchise in the new miniseries, including turning Starbuck into a woman, and having the Cylons appear to be human. Depending on where you fall on the "preserve it / change it" continuum, Mongooses' choices about which continuity to follow could be construed to reflect Matt's comments about "screwing it up".

3) The videogame is a PS/2 product, and that may explain the licensing angle - this may be a sublicense from the videogame franchise

A licensed property based on a Sci-Fi channel property wouldn't necessarily be the smartest of business moves. Think Farscape and AEG...

I'm having trouble thinking up something that is bigger then Dr Who or James Bond. Dune would fit but is that Sony? I don't think Starship Troopers is bigger then Dr Who or James Bond. Aliens and/or Predator might be but they're not Sony. And as I think about it I don't think Dr Who or Bond are either but I'm not sure about that.

Harry Potter is much, much bigger than Bond, Who, Dune, or just about any other license. It's the King License.

Well, maybe Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and Lord of the Rings could give it a run for the money.

Of those, I think Harry Potter is the one that some gamers would both "turn their noses up to" and worry about "messing with the Vision". Even some gamers, of all people, think HP is just for kids.

On the other hand, I think JK Rowling would have SERIOUS issues about a free form RPG. She okay'd the video games (where you can only say or do what the program allows you to say or do) but she'd freak at the idea of some GM creating a campaign where [insert anything that changes HP canon].

Tolkien certainly has the "worry about messing with the Vision" thing going for it. And the Tolkien folks are certainly not shy about licensing (see the numerous video games). But who would turn their noses up at Tolkien?

I'm curious what this is all about.

I think it's pretty clear that it is Starship Troopers. A few years have passed, since I've last seen the film, but I'm quite sure that this quote:

"Countdown to Victory begins. . ."

is from the Starship Troopers movie. (I copied the quote from Psion's post).

Can someone confirm, that this quote is indeed from the film? I think it appears in those TV-ad style scenes.
