Get stunning fist and use it.... a lot.

Get a Monk's belt ASAP

Bracers of Armor are a must

Get a high strength, so you can actually hit and deal reasonable damage

Multiclass from level 2 on in something more useful <--- I had to say it

I typically find that improved grapple is much better 1st level bonus feat than stunning fist.

Strength is more important than dexterity or wisdom for a useful monk IME.

I've found that a very effective monk can be made by using a 1st level feat to take a reach weapon like the glaive or guisarm. I favoured the glaive - 1d10/x3 damage and 10ft reach is a killer combination, especially since you still threaten and fight at 5ft using your unarmed combat at no penalty for holding the glaive. It gives a lot of potential tactics for different situations, and gives you a bit of punch at low levels.

Cheers

From level 1? well, Weapon Focus (unarmed strike) is a good third level feat. Dodge always helps. Everyone can use Improved Initiative. For the first ten levels, something like

Human monk
1 Dodge, Improved Initiative
3 Weapon Focus (unarmed strike)
6 Point Blank Shot
9 Precise Shot

the last two being for shuriken or whatnot, since you won't always be able to melee.

People are often tempted to boost Dex, but it need only be modest. Tumble is a class skill, Wis helps both AC and your stunning fist, and you might as well stick to Str for damage. Cha can be a dump stat, and Int might as well as be your second one.

I'd say Str > Wis> Con > Dex > Int > Cha

Ability Focus Stunning Fist ... perhaps 3 monk levels and the Ascetic Rogue feat... yields yet another +2 to Stunning DC...

UA druid variant with monk abilities...

Tattooed monk...

Monk/sorcerer or Monk/Exbard with Ascetic Mage...

He said core books only. Ability Focus is good; I would probably go Improved Critical (unarmed strike) (12th), Ability Focus (15th) and finally Power Attack (18th).

If you want to be a grapple monkey, go Half-Orc Monk. Put your highest stat in Str, get Improved Grapple as a bonus feat at 1st level. If you put a 12 in Int, it will be decreased to 10 and you'll still get 4 skill points/level.

As a half-orc, you'll get Darkvision, meaning you can strike in complete darkness. You'll get a bonus to Str, and no penalty to the two key monk abilities (Dex and Wis).

By the elite array, you'll be looking at:

Str 15 (17) Dex 14 Con 10 Int 12 (10) Wis 13 Cha 8 (6)

With these stats, your AC will be 13, your unarmed strike will be +3 attack, 1d6+3 damage, and your grapple check will be +7.

Get Tumble up to the point where it enhances Fighting Defensively. Get Improved Natural Attack (unarmed strike) at 6th level, when you qualify for it. Boost your Strength to 18 at 4th level, then boost your Wisdom to 14 at 8th.

Get potions of mage armor as soon as possible. When you have enough cash, comission bracers of armor. Get a monk's belt.
