Monk 6/Ranger 1/Fighter 1 - How many attacks per round?

reveal

Adventurer
8th level character - Monk 6/Ranger 1/Fighter 1

16 STR (+3)
Weapon Focus (Rapier)

Ambidexterity (Ranger)
Two-Weapon Fighting (Ranger)
Unarmed Attack (Monk)

Attacking with a +2 Rapier in main hand and Unarmed (would say off-hand but Monks have no off-hand).

Using the numbers in the book, it looks like the character gets 4 attacks per round using the Rapier in one hand and the other Unarmed. The bonuses are +10/+5 Rapier and +6/+3 Unarmed.

Is this correct? I think it is, as does the player of course, but I want to make sure we're not miscalculating here.

Rapier is not a monk weapon, and you can't use the monk's more favorable unarmed attack rate when fighting with a non-monk weapon. (PHB, page 39, 1st column, 2nd paragrapgh.)

When fighting with non-monk weapons, monks have an off-hand just like everyone else. (PHB, page 39, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph.)

Your BAB would be +6/+1 normally. +10/+5 with strength and weapon focus.

Making an off-hand attuck using your Unarmed Strike gives you three attacks at: +8/+7/+2 (Rapier, unarmed strike, rapier)

A somewhat related question I have, if you take 4 levels of Fighter then multi into Monk. Would your unarmed attack be +4/+1? I'm going under the assumption that damage and all is by Monk level only, But do you get the iterative attacks?
Also, can a Fighter Focus in unarmed attacks without Improved Unarmed Strike?

Nope. You would have a BAB of +4 and a UAB (Unarmed Attack Bonus) of +0.

You can choose to use either your BAB (which applies to any attack) or your UAB (which only applies to unarmed attacks and special monk weapons) when attacking, but you only get your monk iterative attacks if you are using your UAB.

Also, can a Fighter Focus in unarmed attacks without Improved Unarmed Strike?

You can focus in "Grapple" or "Unarmed Strike" and you don't need the "Improved Unarmed Strike" feat to do it. (See the PHB, page 86, Weapon Focus).

One little mistake in Caliban's post... Attack bonuses would be:

+10 (+2 rapier 1st attack)
+7 (unarmed off-hand attack)
+5 (+2 rapier 2nd attack)

(even when using a non-magical rapier, the last attack would be +3, not +2 as Caliban posted).

BTW, what happens, if you fight with your unarmed attacks as primary weapon and a non-monk weapon (i.e. dagger) in your off-hand (assuming Ambiexterity/TWF)?

Do you get the UAB for the primary attacks at -2 (TWF) and one extra attack at your highest BAB (with -2 for TWF) for the off-hand?

Or is it just fighting like any other char (BAB with iterative -5, etc), as soon as you do not use unarmed attacks and/or monk weapons only?

The Monk description only says, that you can't strike with a Flurry of Blows (which alone makes this rather useless, as Flurry of Blows is the same as TWF pretty much already, of course you'll have to use weapons, that are not as good then).

Another question, when fighting with a monk weapon, do you still have to alternate attacks with an unarmed strike, or can you make all UAB/Flurry attacks with a single weapon?

Bye
Thanee
