Monk Feedback

Yeah - after posting my comment about greatspear and reading the commentary I concur, it wouldn't serve as an implement. (If a PC wanted to burn Arcane Implement Proficiency - or, more technically I suppose, Psionic Implement Proficiency - on it because of a cool concept, I'd probably allow it even though no class that we know of has implement: spear(s). Except One Bad Egg's awesome Witch Doctor, and even then they moved away from actual spears in the published edition.)

As for the religion question, everybody who's talking about how omitting it from the class skills list somehow makes it more viable to create a nonreligious monk... wha? Huh? Are we therefore implying that (say) non-thievery warlocks are uncanonical? That gruff, tactless, completely undiplomatic paladins cannot exist?

Hell, for my Starlock (who grew up over the course of 20mins subjective time, inside a bronze orerry, and who marvels at things like wagons, or ceilings, or crowds of ten or more people), I took a voluntary -10 modifier to Streetwise, even though it's on the Warlock's skill list. Not choosing it wasn't enough for me, because even then she'd have a +5 even at first level, which just doesn't suit me at all.

Unless the monk's skill choices are so restricted that it's basically mandatory, or it's made actually mandatory like Arcana is for wizards, putting Religion on the skill list says nothing about what every monk should look like. Or even many monks - I mean, Thievery+Warlocks? Some, yes, but many? No. All it says is "We are willing to support this extremely common monk concept, as one of the things covered by the basic envelope of this class."
