A feat that granted 'unarmed proficiency' (a proficiency bonus & higher damage die) could easily turn a martial class into a marital martial artist - eastern flavor or not, as the player chooses to portray it. Maybe a few other related feats to add weapon descriptors or qualities to the unarmed attack. Of course, you'd still need a way to add enhancement bonuses for it to be viable at higher levels.
