Well, I presume that you would grant that "house rule" is distinct from "rules printed by WotC"!

An advantage of the slower traffic on the house rules board is that it stays on the front page there longer and has more opportunities to be viewed...

Having read through your description, I like the idea better than the standard PHB rules, and I'll give some consideration to whether this is something that I want to look at taking further myself.

n.b. my wife and I had most of our early disagreements over the different interpretations of the word "you" - when I used it in a third-person sense and she heard it in a first-person sense. Tricky :( . Fine once we realised what was going on though ;)

This looked good for a minute-monks are clearly screwed by the standard rules. I think it might go overboard, though ... By the PH, a Mnk10/Ftr10 attacks at +17/+12/+7/+2 whether armed or unarmed. The monk levels don't end up counting for anything but increased unarmed damage (which isn't nothing, but still!) Under your system, that character attacks at +17/+14/+11/+6/+1 when unarmed or using monk weapons. Looks much better! Compare that to a straight Mnk20, though: +15/+12/+9/+6/+3 unarmed. The character who left off his specialized martial arts training at 10th level surpasses the Zen master who maintained his focus.

Maybe that's OK-the monk/fighter trades away a lot of special abilities and increased unarmed damage for that. But it just doesn't feel right, somehow ...
 

For my campaign world I think I could happily rationalise this... of the two monks at 10th level, one focussed on his martial skills, while the other his spiritual essence. although the Mnk10/Ftr10 has a slightly better attack for his top two attacks, he is only doing 1d10 per blow, compared with Mr Zen who is doing 1d20...

The most optimised for damage and attacks would be Mnk16/Ftr4 who could get +16/+13/+10/+7/+2 for 1d20+2 (unarmed specialisation!). He would be giving up timeless body, slow fall, empty body, perfect self and speak with anything living for 3 combat feats - a tricky decision to make IMO since those are some kickin' monk abilities amongst that list.

yah, after making the chart which, which I tried to do logically (and i'm pretty good at that having taking a horde of college math classes), i was looking at fighter/monk combos and figured the fighter4/monk16 was a pretty nice combo, as is the monk 12/fighter8, but they all just depend on how Monklike/martial artist you wanna go.

anyhoo, makes the monk much more useful as a multiclass if you want to have mid/low amounts of monk or even steven amounts of monk.

It does look pretty good, and it's not hard to rationalize any of the weirdness. No harder than the standard rule, anyway. I wonder if I could talk my DM into using it. :D I'd thought about it a lot, because I'm playing a monk, and planning to switch to fighter at 11th level and then go with the weapon master prestige class from 13th on. The severe dropoff in martial arts abilities was one of my big concerns, especially since the weapon to be mastered was going to be 'unarmed' ...
