Monk?

The R&C books mention that the Monk uses "his ki" to power stuff. I cannot remember the direct quote.

It would be nice to see a few different implementations of the Monk:

- Monk (Martial)
- Monk (Ki)
- Monk (Psi)...

I wouldn't support having too many Monk classes. The 'martial monk' with no wire-fu powers seems to me to be a Rogue with martial arts training. The Monk class, then, would need to be the sort of over-the-top martial artist you see in films, and that means he needs a magic-like power source.

I've thought for a while that Ki (as a power source) sounda an awful lot like internalized psi -- it springs from inside, it is increased through contemplation and meditation, and so on. Ki might be a little too narrow for a power source, but if the monk were a psi class (with no actual psi powers), though...

IMO, "ki" is divine energy. ;)

IMO divine is drawn from an outside source. That said monks as a cloistered cleric medieval type (as the cleric of the knight templar) Is not bad at all and makes a good template for a class. [If they say go for divine-monk you are going to see one in the Divine Power or maybe in the FRCS]

But the idea of the monk that draws is source asian-style is internal (gnostic/mystic) and is drawn with the harmony from nature (zen-like) and is more akin to primal power source (elemental chaos) than a divine gift. [If they say go for this then next year in the PHB2]

Anyway, I'm sure 4E is going to rock. You just have to be patient a little bit and see the Core Books first, and you are going to know more what is their plan for the Monk.

I can't be patient. I need it now! ;)

Seriously though, I agree that we'll get a decent idea of where they are headed after the books come out. I'm just totally jazzed for this concept - I think I'll create my own Monk class after getting the books and seeing how the Cleric and its powers are set up.

He doesn't necessarily need a different power source. It has been said (by Chris Sims, iirc) that while the martial power source is less magical than the others, it is not nonmagical per se. A monk who punches through the barriers of reality to step between places instantaneouly (i.e. dimension door) could very well be martial.

Truth. Once you see how the classes are laid out, and the structure behind them, it's going to be really, really easy to see how the monk is going to work. I can't wait to see it, either!

(Say what you will about the 3.5 monk, I loved mine in Monte Cook's Ptolus game, and I can already imagine how...uh, "Rousetastic" she's going to be in 4E.)
