monks?....

Gauntlets have an entry on the weapons table, and are therefor a weapon seperate from an unarmed strike.

You can enchant gauntlets - two personal favorites that I've seen were a set of Merciful, Thundering, Knockback gauntlets, and a much simpler pair of gauntlets with Disruption.

However, since gauntlets are a weapon, and not a special monk weapon to boot, a monk would be well advised to avoid them.

Note, also, that you don't have to use your hands to make unarmed strikes,

Just to re-iterate because it is the most important thing said in this thread.

A monk can wear spiked guantlets without affecting his ability to use unarmed attacks one iota because he merely makes his unarmed attacks with elbows, knees, feet, headbutt etc.

He can't make unarmed strikes with his hands while wearing spiked guantlets or any other prohibited item, but he can still fight with full effectiveness using other parts of his body.

Cheers

Yup, but he cannot use enhancements on his gauntlets with the unarmed damage progression of the monk... which is usually why monks in the Rules forum ask whether they can wear gauntlets ;)

Yea... the trick there is to enchant your gloves of dex to give you + to hit. Then you get it all... ^+^

if a item have a sepeate damage property its a weapon, simple as that. if it dont have a damage property then it become just another item of clothing. atleast thats my view...

if a monk wants to use a magical weapon, then they should get one of the monk-specific ones with a enchantment. yes they loose their unarmed damage value but they keep the number of attacks.

one could in theory say that a gauntlet is a monk specific weapon (they are after all only reinforced gloves, so why they are not made monk specific weapons is beyond me). or one could make a special kind of magical gloves that apply magical effects to the monks hands while still useing thier unarmed damage bonus (im going by 3.0 here, i dont have a clue if they have this in 3.5. alltho that comment in the second post makes me belive that there is).
