Monster Levels (savage species/dragon312)

If you want to play a monster and take monster levels, as per the rules for savage species (Which I don't have) or playing the celestial monsters as characters in dragon #312 (which I do have), do you have to stick with the monster levels without multiclassing as anything else until you have maxed out the monster levels? Or can you take only one level or a few levels of the monster "class", and then multiclass into something like rogue or fighter?

You have to take all the monster class levels first before multiclassing. I believe this is addressed in SS.

Yep, SavS specifies that you must complete the monster/racial levels before you can take anything else.

OTOH, if you want to use the Monster Templates from Sean Reynolds' articles on the Wizards site, you can mix and match levels of the template with regular class levels in any order you want to take them. That might be a good option for you, depending on what monsters you are interested in using...
