CR of mountain giant

Yeah, that CR is really screwed up. It might make sense if it had immunity to mind affecting spells, but as it is it's just enchanter bait (or necromancer... Magic Jar!)

It's a shame that WoTC's quality control is so bad that they can't even get the 3 monsters that they handpick for the web preview right.

Hi all! :)

Nice to see a preview of Monster Manual 2. Thanks Angelsboi; by the way I love the sig. animation (one of the Fatal Fury games?)

Regarding the Challenge Ratings, as I see it:

Effigy = CR 22
Gravorg = CR 7
Mountain Giant = CR 20

Another point about the Mountain Giant...if its Colossal shouldn't it be at least 64ft. tall.

Interesting trio of monsters, but then again I was buying Monster Manual 2 regardless...

As if I had any doubt you would! :) If only point how weak they are compared to some of yours! ;) *is kidding* Btw did you see the web enhancements yet? Pretty interesting. Well that and the Desktops as well.

Even by upper krust standards CR 20 for that giant is way too hihg. I would rather take any mountain giant on than the possibility of a solar, titan, or a dragon of tha same CR. Its a no contest. It may do lots of damage, but a couple of spells nullify the threat as opposed to the other 3 where you will need to have a lot of luck on your side.

Maybe its just me but i always found it a problem since the beginning, that weak will saves and maybe fort saves susally kills you no matter what level. One of the biggest pet peeves i have against 3e. When a 1st lvl spell like glitterdust can affect a 10th lvl fighter with a fair chance of failing, i find it a problem. But then, thats just me.

Hi there! :)

Well it deals about x3 Damage and has about x3 hit points with regards a typical 20th-level Fighter.

Thats because:

A Solar should be CR 26.

A Titan is CR 21.

A Very Old Silver Dragon should be CR 24.

When you determine CR you have to identify what a monster can do, rather than what it can't do.

Incidently if the Mountain Giant is Colossal (?) then its strength is utterly pitiful (compare that to a Storm Giants). This reinforces the likelihood that it is merely meant to be Gargantuan. Be sure and add +4 to its AC.

Upper Krust all i am saying is that i would rather fight the Mountain giant than mostly anything of the same CR. By the CR's given by wotc(could be errors) the giant is 5 more cr than a titan. Give me a break!!!. Now what would be a bigger threat?

LOL! :) Some how Darrin I thought you might say that. Btw, I liked the picture they used for Death Knight. in the Desktop section. What did you think of it?
