D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual 2 or Player's Handbook 2?

Neither.
Designers would not be able to fill a whole PHB2 without filling it with feats, spells, races, and archetypes which will raise power creep.
Designers would not be able to fill a whole MM2 without making up stupid monsters.

This is especially true if they make setting books.

A combination would be better. An Advanced Guide. It would have less pressure to be filled up with nonsense.

I'd love to have both but I'd rather have a second PHB, with new archetypes and feats, and maybe new classes. I found the Monster Manual pretty to look at but not very exciting, I'm not sure I'm eager to see a whole new book full of hp-bags.

As I told way back, no PHB2 ever, no PHB1 either, just a single, unique, unnumbered PHB. No splat mentality plz.

Having said that, some classes could really use more options. More bardic schools, more cleric domains, more fighter subclasses and maneuvers, an alternative ranger, more rogue options, more sorcerer bloodlines (and some exclusive spells), and more Warlock pacts. (Wizards should get nothing, they are already overspoiled as it is).

I guess another MM because I feel that the PHB covers pretty much every possible thing you could want and the DMG tells you how to make the other niche stuff you might want. So MM I guess, but this edition I don't actually want any new stuff except campaign settings and modules honestly. Well, maybe a book devoted to more variant rules. I can never get enough variant rules!!

Hiya.

MM2, easy. 5th edition hasn't been out anywhere near long enough to exhaust the current PHB material. I may be ready for a PHB2 in, say, three to five years. Even then I don't think a PHB2 would be needed...I'd much rather see a sort of "compilation of the best of the best [or at least most interesting]" things that have come out for 5e over a few years. Sort of like an "Unearthed Arcana" that we had for 1e AD&D...a few new class arch-types (say, one or two for each core class), maybe a few new feats (no more than a dozen, please), another dozen or two spells total (all classes total...not 'each class'), some optional modules for things like healing, building/boat construction, skill training, weapons/armor of different materials/sizes, tables for the DM to use for inspiration or "on the fly gaming"...that kind of thing.

If/when a 5e PHB2 comes out, what I definitely do not want to see is a basic reprint of the PHB...but with new classes, spells, feats, skills, etc. Right now, 5e has the backing of many, many "old school", "new school", and outright "newbie" players. I believe that is because it is a quick and easy system, with...and this is the most important part...an obvious slant of game-empowerment being towards the DM and NOT the player. As soon as WotC starts to take 5e down the path of "Well, we have more players, so lets make stuff for them before we make stuff for the DM"...well, that's likely the time I stop buying 5e stuff. I get a feeling that I'm not alone in this regard. I guess the test will be what WotC wants more of...solid, long-term 5e enthusiasts, or vaporous, flash-in-the-pan "it's just a game so I'll drop it as soon as the next kewl new thing comes out" types...

MM2 for sure; there are still a bunch of classic monsters that haven't yet seen print in 5E. Jargogle has compiled a nice list of many of them.

Not a PH2 per se, but more player options. It'd be great to see a dedicated Psionics Handbook. Additionally, several of the PH classes are sorely under-developed compared to others, or are missing some key archetypes; for example, in my opinion cleric domains are not adequate in their current state, and more granular approach with more options would greatly improve the situation.

A combination would be better. An Advanced Guide. It would have less pressure to be filled up with nonsense.
Please, no. I want WotC to explore the possibilities of new content with the 5E ruleset, but I really hope not to see Advanced Guides in the Paizo sense: bloating, poorly-tested, and power-creepy, like Advanced Class Guide.

Eww. No. Not a like Paizo Advanced Guide. I just lack a better term.

I mean a book that is 1/2 MM2, 1/3 PHB2, and 1/6 DMG2
Like a setting book or a theme book... but no setting or theme. All generic stuff.

50-75 monsters, 1-2 subclasses per class, 3-4 races, NO FEATS, 15-25 spell total, NO FEATS, some traps, some magic items, some equipment, NO FEATS.

Okay maybe not no feats. Maybe class-wannabe feats like a rogue-lite or monk-lite feats. BUT NOTHING ELSE.

It depends upon what's in PHB2...
More races, more subraces, and more class archetypes, plus many more spells? Yes, please. But call it Unearthed Arcana....
New classes? No expansion of new archetypes for the existing classes? give me the MM2 instead.

I am all for seeing new content, but please no "numbered" books ever if it can be helped. Even if you just called the next monster manual a Fiend Folio or a Creature Codex or whatever, I would vastly prefer that to Monster Manual 2, The same goes to for Player's Manual 2. What you gain in sales for perception of being an "essentia"l core product, you lose in player goodwill in the long run. I know it is just psychological, but psychology is important.
