Monster Manual 2...super rant!!!

I just bought the book and I realized that there are too many Undead or Construct monsters. It seems to be that the writers didn't have enough imagination or inspiration to find a decent origin for each monster so they made them constructs or undead created by either a necromancer or a some wizard.

Hmm ... did you get the expurgated version, or something? My copy has a ton of monstrous humanoid races, aberrations, magical beasts, and outsiders. Other than the fact that I don't really care for the illustration of the hook horror (too chubby -- the vrock looks more like a hook horror than the hook horror does), I'm pleased as punch with it. This, combined with Tome of Horrors, might actually quench my apparently-insatiable thirst for monster books.

Percentage Ratio

If the number of creatures were spread evenly (using 250 as the maximum number of monsters in the MM2), then one would expect about 14 monsters per creature type (or 5.6% of the total).

There are 27 golem monsters, making their share 10.8%.

Is that too much?

Oh, the original post said something about undead too, so what's the ratio of undead and golem monsters to the rest of the book?

No. There are 14 Constructs, the most of which are not golems. There are 13 undead. Together they total 27.

Spell Wrapper
Not to mention the Shrink Wrapper...

Rhyme Stealer
...and don't forget the Shrink Rapper...

Knife Deer
...to say nothing of the Unique Deer, so vulnerable to 'neak attacks...

Shadow Ant
...and for those who just love to pile on the templates, the Adamantine Shadow Adam Ant.

Honestly, Edgar, you really ought to post your list as a Homebrew Challenge over at the Creature Catalog forums. Freakin' hilarious!

I likely won't be getting MM2 anytime soon--mostly cause I can't afford it, and partly because I'm not sure there is much in there I want or really need. I'm actually a big Golem (and Dragon) fan, so that's actually a plus in my book. (pun intended).

However, I've already got money squirreled away for Tome of Horrors and Green Ronin's Witch's Handbook.
