Monster Manual III "In the Works"

That doesn't seem to be WotC's current operating procedure.
No, no it doesn't.
Waterdeep will be done. Oh yes. And when it is done.... Uhhh... I suppose I will have another book that was available in the last edition, but newly updated to the current edition. And it will be good...
And it will be the same. Glad to see all that flavor text needs to be "newly updated to the current edition". I had no idea this was necessary - learn something new every day!

No one else can make a Cloud Ray or such now.
Not true. There was a similar creature in The White Rose (Book III of the Chronicals of the Black Company). I doubt very much that Green Ronin (whom have the license to produce a Black Company RPG and are doing so under the OGL) are at all considering the notion that they can't produce a "cloud ray" as a feature of the setting.

By the same notion, I have seen many other instances of the same sort of creature (particularly in various stories published in Heavy Metal). As such, while I'm better off not knowing anything about WotC's Cloud Ray (which I'm assuming is a flying manta ray), I am undeniably free to create a similar creature of my own design because the only IP WotC would actually "own" would be anything relating to their version that's not OGC (i.e., a new and unique ability) as the concept of a flying manta ray already has a history outside of WotC's version.

Going further, I can actually use the ESD Conversion Agreement, dig up the 2E version, and flat-out convert it, releasing it as OGC per the terms of the agreement.

While I agree with you mostly, I do see a psuedo-need for an update: NPCs change (old ones advance or die, new ones enter the scene), especially with the new rules set, the time line advances, new plots, schemes, and hooks can be introduced, etc.

The thing I think that you would object to would be a full-sized book that is mostly re-hashed material from the previous releases when a smaller "update" book (like a moderate-sized module) is all that would really be needed; and while I'm not an FR fan, I do agree, the bulk of the material is already available and many NPCs can be updated by individual GMs without much worry.

Of course it won't be the SAME. The NEW Waterdeep book will have a cover that is tan-colored with a funky modern art interpretation of Waterdeep people on it.

The old book won't have that book cover.

And the new flavor text will be d20, which means that it will have 50%
more Drizzt. Drizzt, Drizzt, Drizzt. Here's an excerpt:
"And then Drizzt went to Waterdeep where he singlehandedly killed all
of the thieves and Halaster with only his right sword. And then he
ressurrected them because he was bored, and killed them all with only
the left sword. And then he ressurrected them again, and let his pet
panther have at them."

Yeah I talked to him about this. Other than some novel covers for Drizzt books, Todd isn't really doing anything for WOTC this year. They're simply to cheap to afford him anymore. Utterly lame. :\

Just a question: who does afford him then? Who does Todd Lockwood work for if not working for WotC?

Anyone could make a giant flying manta ray and call them Skywhales. WotC would not have the PI on them. They could have an interesting twist, like eating the flesh of one would give you a sort of zombie curse that would make you undergo chrysalidis and come out of it as a new skywhale...
(Bonus point to anyone who know the reference.)

Waterdeep is supposed to be updated next year, if you didn't hear already. And besides Ed has reams and reams of notes on that city that has never seen the light of day even though there was at least five sourcebooks and box sets on that city in the old material......

Except the 3/3.5 update will be half spells, feats, prestige classes, etc..... :(

I seriously hope so, that cover is pretty bland.

Other things I'd like to see:
Todd Lockwood
Sam Wood
Arnie Swekel
Ron Spencer
Marc Sasso
Wayne Reynolds
Raven Mimura

But instead, we'll get
Dennis Cramer
David Roach
Vince Locke
Matt Mitchell
:(
Every single time I hear something like this, I feel depressed.

Yes, I LOVE Lockwood's art, as well as all of those listed on your "like to see" list...but if you ONLY stick to those, no new artists get into the field. I guess this gets to me so much because I already see how hard it is to get into the artistic field, but adding to that an attitude that seems to not allow for ANYONE new just makes it even worse.
