On another thread it has been bandied about whether MMIV was Good, Above Average, Below Average, or Bad. So, in an attempt to quantify that...

I chose that I felt it could have been better. While the production value is high (not counting any stat errors), the over all selection of monsters, as well as the number of monsters included, left something to be desired.

Also, I was a little let down by the inclusion of monsters with PC levels. Personally, if I wanted a monster with PC levels, I could do that myself. I liked some of the new monsters, but wish there could have been more.

Many are griping about the new stat block format, and frankly, I think it leaves a lot to be desired. I learned how to read the old entries in record time to find exactly what I wanted, and a change this late in the game seems unnecessary.

One thing that I *did* like was how they laid out the Table of Contents. To itemize the monsters like that was a brilliant idea, though I would also have liked to have had a chart that broke the monsters down by creature type (like the MM 3.5).

To summarize, I think it looks nice, and some monsters are great additions, but over all I was left feeling that had I not pre-ordered it, I'd have left it on the shelf at my FLGS.

Just one thread? We could open a MMIV board at this point. :p

Quite possibly, but us just say that it was the MMIV thread that I have posted to most recently, aside from this one. :p

Poll is going about as I expected, at least so far.

You know, I've read all of the comments and vitrol against MMIV and was really expecting to hate it. However, I got it yesterday and I must say that I really liked it. Now I have to qualify this by stating that as of right now I'm not an active gamer (meaning I recently relocated and don't have a group). However, I rather liked the presentation and the ideas. I know that I'm by far in the minority on this but for me, it wasn't the stinker that some around here have found it to be.

I don't like the Monster Manual IV but I think it's very useful.

When I think of a Monster Manual, I want new or updated monsters.

I don't want monsters from prevous books with classes (non core especially) that aren't going to follow the logical extensions (like no psionic gith) and I don't want maps.

Now those things in and of themselves are very useful.

I just don't want them in my Monster Manual.

Indifferent, definitely indifferent. The lair stuff (that was that book, right?) sounds like a nice enough idea, though.
