Monster playable race

Actually, I like the idea of having Saproling Factory being a specialized & limited variant of a Summon Nature's Ally SLA, so you could use the Meta-SLA feats with it...
In addition, that makes the durability of the Saprolings self-limiting.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of reinventing the wheel. If you've got an ability that gives you another creature, it's either an animal companion or a summoned monster. You can tweak it after that, but those are the two starting points.

Also, this thing advances much like a cleric, so a summon monster (level/2) spell is right on target powerwise.

Hmm. I agree. I like the sla upgrades but they are far to much. I think we should stick too keeping it simple. Like just adding an upgrade every now and then. Something like every even lvl your saps last longer.

Well, those are feats, not hardcoded abilities. So you keep the base simple, and then the character can opt to take some of the feats - if the saproling factory ability is a spell-like ability.

I'm not sure what you would call it. They bud the saps off of themselves. It's not really magical. It's a natural ability. It's how they reproduce and feed.

But again I'm not to sure if the ability is a spell like ability. I wanna say yes to get that sweet feat. But that's my power player comin out.
