Monsters

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
Room after room of humanoid monsters with precious little to differentiate them other than a handful of hit points.

"But it's up to the DM to differentiate them in how he describes and presents them to the players," I hear you cry. "For room after room after room after room."

As a DM I was left cold by this playtest. The prospect of running the game is not an exciting one.

Hmm, what was that quote... When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return.

Just play it.

Worked for so many years. Different combinations of AC and Hp and numbers make a great difference in the experience.

It worked for so many years in the same way that I used to like cheap spread on sandwiches when I was a kid. Then I experienced sophistication and choice in my food, and don't want to eat simple fodder like that except maybe once in a while when I'm feeling lazy or hung over. And I certainly wouldn't eat at a restaurant that provided it.

I don't need to pay for a product that provides 'different combinations of AC and hp'. I can just scribble it down on a piece of paper.

So no, I won't 'just play it'.

I may be wrong, but it sounds as if you are viewing the adventure as a series of combat encounters. If that were the case I can see how it could appear boring.

I think that if you run it as an adventure which includes exploration and interaction as well as combat you may be giving the rules a better test of the range of things they are supposed to do, and find that there is more fun in the caves after all.

Cheers

You could always delete the files and go do something else. They asked for your help if the only thing you all can do is carp and find fault you're probably welcome to find something less droll to do.

Hold on - let me get this straight: my comments are only valid if they are positive? Or should I send you a personal message before each post and make sure you agree with me?

I don't mind people taking issue with what I've said, even flat out disagreeing with it, but I do object to having a thread hijacked by someone whose contribution boils down to 'I don't like what you said, so shut up'.

If I don't like elements of the new rules, and I tell them so (which I will), I am helping. Isn't that the idea of a playtest?
