One campaign setting I've had lots of fun building virtually (not played) has humans and plane-touched races only as both PC and monster races. I'm all for dropping elves, dwarves, halflings, etc. Whoever said fantasy had to be Tolkienien? D&D seems to borrow much more from Fritz Leiber or Robert E. Howard anyway, and they pretty much just used humans as "PC races." More power to you, Tonguez!

All or nothing

Either it's not alowed or all the players are monster characters.

For example, we're playing a campaign with half-fiends as characters (and a fallen half-celestial). Very cool so far.

anything [weak] goes

I have always encouraged the players to play what they like, with the "minor" limit that a 1st level is just a first level and all those stud abilities will be absent or nurfed to where you are equal to other 1st levels. So your 1st level half-fiend, half dragon vampire had better be polite to the 2nd level kobold or you get squashed.
Not that many seem to accept the offer.

We've had githzerai, planetouched, drow, half-fiends and half-celestials, and a lich be used at one time or another. I don't know if any of those really count as monsters though. I've been really open with the group, especially within the last year. I think I might have told someone no once, when he wanted to play a Satyr, but the party was still a lower level, and the ECL charts weren't printed anywhere yet.

Anything goes in my games. (If the specific monster in question actually exists and is accessable to the party.)

Most of the other DMs I know limit the maximum ECL to +3. Bugbears, Half-Celestials and Deep Gnomes are all okay; Trolls and Centaurs are not.

I have no problem with a pc who wants to play a humanoid or some other unusual race choice, but I do have serious reservations about the ECL system, so I dissallow any race that has an ECL of higher than 0. If the ECL system didn't raise my hackles so much, I probably wouldn't have major issues with any pc racial desire, but I might draw the line at green slime. :D

A more detailed poll might have given you better ammo for DragonsFoot, if that is what you are looking for.

For example:

[]Yes, almost any monster species is fair game
[]Yes, but only the creatures listed in the DMG are fair game
[]Yes, but only humanoids or another short list of creatures are possible (remember, according to one DF grognards, the drow in UA "don't count" because they "aren't monsters.")
[]No, only races in the PHB (or a subset) apply.
