Well, Monte Cook owns Malhavoc Press, so "Mearls' success" is also a financial benefit for Cook. Not that there is anything wrong with making money, but I doubt very much that the action here is quite as altruistic as you propose.

As a parting comment I will say that you should never judge anything by its title. There are plenty of good books and movies out there with lousy titles.

Indeed, humility as a virtue goes back as far as the ancient Greeks, although there were more than a few Greek heroes who didn't have it (they usually were the victim of some tragic end though). Countless philosophers through the millenia have praised it, especially the more theological ones.

While I can't disagree or agree on the exact cultural source of the concept of humility, I can say that humility is a cultural aspect that is not universal.

The Vikings and other assorted folks of teutonic heritage were not exactly full of humility. Consider Beowulf as an example. It is expected that you announce yourself AND you deeds. Boasting is encouraged (lying may not be). In effect, that was your resume in that culture. I would expect that the english etiquette of saying "Mike and I" was not derived from the northern folk. Instead, I'd say "Me and Mike did this," putting the emphasis on myself, that I was indeed there.

I don't know what the big deal is. The book cover says "Monte Cook Presents: Iron Heroes" and "Written By: Mike Mearls"

I think Mike got the credit for making it happen. And Monte's simply saying, "hey, my company is putting this out. If you like my stuff, you'll probably like this as well."

Actually, in person he was extremely civil, considerate, and polite. You would never have guessed that from his writing, of course!

(In my 'professional opinion', I think he was a mediocre philosopher, but a brilliant psychologist.)

My take on it is this:
Malhavoc is ALL "Monte Cook presents". If you like Monte Cook's stuff, his company makes it, or stuff that he feels is good, so buying Malhavoc branded products is your best bet.

Adding "Monte Cook presents..." to the title, when you already know it's done through him/ his company, seems redundant. I can't see that it adds anything. I'm also not sure why it was done with this product.

I doubt it's ego, but it still seems silly to me. Since I don't really buy Malhavoc's Brand already, it wouldn't dissuade me from buying it, but it wouldn't persuade me either.

Maybe it's an alphabetical thing? ("we need this book next to Arcana Unearthed!")

A lot of people don't know Malhavoc is Monte's company, but they do know his name because its on the cover of their DMG. If I were to poll all my players, none of them would know the name of Monte's company, but two of them would recognise the name (out of four).
