Monte Cook speaks ... and he doesn't hate 3.5!

How is that any better than what's happening with 3.5? For every person that says one idea is bad, there's another that says it's great. You still get the split consensus, and you still get the bickering.

I like the Mystic Theurge. And I like the "lame magic paladin horses". ;)

Both of which were arguably flagged as potential problem areas, because a heap of people didn't. Not nearly as much upset about the special weapon types, especially when we got full information on them. Doesn't take a genius to figure out the latter idea is a lot less likely to be unpopular than the former two. That's the sort of thing I'm getting at. Of course, half the time us unwashed masses kneejerk predictably and get it backwards, like claiming the monk was overpowered, so use discretion...

Again, doesn't require consensus to flag it as maybe needing to be relooked at.

True, but along with every idea that someone has a problem with, they often also have their own solution to propose. Those often differ quite wildly.

Like roman collesseum crowds, trollish hordes should only have thumbs up or thumbs down powers, at best. Suggesting solutions gives you 10 million alt.rangers, which would result in chaos and be absolutely and utterly impractical, as opposed to just largely impractical.

Yeah, but I'm not sure everyone would understand that implicit rule. Personally, I think the best solution is just broader playtesting. I don't know if anyone from ENWorld helped playtest 3.5, but there's a good amount of gaming experience and knowledge available here who probably could've given some good feedback. I don't think it should be done in an open forum, however.

On a different topic: Man, reading these boards, I get the impression that designing 3.5 is a thankless task! There's just such an overwhelming amount of opinion out there, some of it really scathing. In a way, all of the revision previews, the editorials, the opinions, and the defending of gaming material that hasn't been released yet, has numbed me a bit.

Hey, I don't mind 10 million alt.rangers! I saw a quote somewhere sometime that projected in a year or two 75% of the Internet content would be alt.rangers. The other 25% would remain porn, of course.

I'll only construe one thing from this statement of Monte's:

He is a true professional, and the publishing industry needs more people like him.

But, Monte, please give me the same credit you are asking. Please don't take one thing I said and label it to mean something completely different.

I like what you said, but Monte needs to hear it, not me. I don't think he even knows of the existence of this thread.

I put a link to his thread on his forum so you can discuss it there with him.

My only take on it is that I agree that its crappy that WotC is doing this and telling us its what we wanted. That's putting words in the community's mouth.

Did I read that right? You know you don't actually have to buy 3.5 either...
