Monte's AU races

Exellent! Another 2003 hardback to look forward to! I really hope the new magic system he hints at will be significantly different than the standard D&D system.

Either way, I've never been disappointed by a Monte Cook product!

So what exactly is so very different between the the old "dwarves, elves, gnomes, and halflings" mold and this
new "giants, sprytes, cats, dogs and 'aliens'" mold

none of these are new in roleplaying fantasy generally even if they are new to DnD. In fact the various 3e Websites already have a vast selection of Noble (half) Giants, tiny sprites, catmen, dogmen and telepathic alien-humans etc as PC races and although I don't doubt that Montes versions will be good I hardly think they are anything to rave about...

There are only two kinds of non-standard fantasy races:

1. The sort of stuff Monte is giving us, which is open to the charge of not being a completely new idea.

2. Completely new concepts (such as floating intelligent jellyfish), which are open to the charge of being too off the wall and too alien to really play.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't proposition.

I'm just glad that FINALLY someone is getting away from the pseudo-Tolkien junk that's been old for decades. Besides Umbragia and Mythic Races, I can't think of any other d20/OGL fantasy products that totally exclude dwarves, elves, and all the rest.

.

Exhibit A: The Manniken (sp) form Mythic Races - personally I found this race to be a refreshingly innovative addition to the D20 universe without it being completely 'weird'

So perhaps there are three kinds of non-standard fantasy races:)

and what about Ghoul as a PC Race - that could be fun!

Ghuls are a PC race in my world: emaciated, pockmarked, pale-skinned creatures from the Spirit world who launch devastating raids on human settlements, they're strong but stupid, though they possess an amazing cunning that helps them find gates between the worlds and use them for their raids.

Oh, you said ghouls. I call 'em lacedons in my world :).

I'm sorry, but no, ghouls are a staple of fantasy literature, not an original creation. Personally, I agree 100% with Geoffrey's assessment, and of the two options, I'd rather take the different yet not necessarily original over the too weird to be interesting any day.

Well, call me iconic, but I'm not too terribly excited by any of the races I saw there. Give me rakasta and lupins if you want furries.

But, I'm reserving judgement until I've seen the book firsthand.

I'm not exceptionally wild about any of the races that Monte had. Though I like the idea of human not being the "deafult" race in the world. My opinion on weather I'm going to buy this book changes with everything that I hear or read about it... right now I'm leaning away from it.... and odds are I'll edit this post when he shows me a bit more of that monte genius.
