Monte's secret project confirmed

Really it's on this board? Where's the link?

Mmm sounds interesting...though how much of this will be portable? I know that most of what they use in KoK TRIES to be portable, but I wonder how much will be with this book.

Hehe - hijack. The product announcement was in the d20 publishers section as well but I can't find it now. I don't know how portable it will be myself, but the upcoming Kalamar Player's Guide might be a good indicator.

Vile Darkness, huh? Damn, maybe I should now ask Morrus, Piratecat or Eric for a slight change to my user ID on these boards. :D

(PS - Just joking; please leave my name alone, guys!!! :))

Darkness,

I would never think of you as Vile.:D

Seriously, similarly themed books can be valuable if they each have something to contribute.

Sadly, there is more than enough historical resources for different types of evil organizations. Some of this may have been used as inspiration in WoTC products.

The 2nd Edition product The Scarlet Brotherhood detailed a group with many affinities to the Nazi party and present day hate groups. Sean K. Reynolds created intelligent, hateful bigots. (If you are running a GH campaign, get this book.)

A friend commented that the Templars from Dark Sun reminded him of the Spanish Inquisition.

I hope the Book of Vile Darkness will also cover how such organizations can be opposed. I have my own ideas of course.

an RPG book about sentient squids

OMG!!! That's brilliant!!!

When's it coming out?
You jest, but you know not what you do, for such a thing already exists!

Lords of Darkness has a few details on Skarlfdshjhgaahgdjhfdkhs the kraken, leader of the Kraken Society (and 20th level wizard to boot), and he's covered in more detail in the free download of The North. He'd make quite a fine villain for a sentient squid, methinks.

I am actually disappionted. Book of Vile Darkess, like other posters have said there is AEG Evil already out. And in 2ed there was the complete book of villians. Being "evil" and making "evil" schemes and evil societies is not hard, enough gamers play evil characters so that right there tells me it is easy :p

I don't know what I hoping for but I was not all that concerned with the secret project. Monte did say it was something WoTC never did and it seems like they have done it before.

Well Thats all.

Well, that's hype for you.

I think I was hoping for something I remember someone suggesting - an entire book devoted to random dungeon generation, ala that chapter in the 1st ed DMG, but much more polished, expanded and sophisticated, perhaps including "themes" (evil temple, trapped vault, cave lairs, wizard tower etc.)...

It would be a design challenge to make it worth using, though.

BLARGH AND PHEH!

The sentient squids in my game are too overpowering me, what do I do?

Look to BADDASS!

That's right, folks, Bothered About Dark Demonic Aquatic (and) Sentient Squids will do their best to eradicate your dark demonic aquatic sentient squid problem!

Just don't ask us to do illithids. They're terrestrial.

Punny. ^_^

Maybe it's not a game book. Maybe it's a history of TSR's days under that Lorraine Williams lady?

Anyway, I doubt it will be like AEG's Evil - the premise of that was largely for the PCs to play evil characters. This is probably not a subject WOTC would do.
