are folks at gencon set up to take credit cards? or is everyone walking around with pockets full of cash?

I had to cancel plans to go to GenCon because I am out of a job, ubt hey, responses to this thread may motivate me to hitchhike there and then fly back first class.

In all seriousness I thought most people brought cash and/or traveller's checks to these things. I suppose a check card/ATM card would be a good thing since most larger hotels have a cash machine nearby but you are still pretty safe to carry one. Well, as safe as a credit card anyhow.

Some of the dealer are set up for credit card but traveler checks are always a good idea. ATM in the past have been on site and VERY busy, expect a line and fees.

If you take cash DON'T put in all in your wallet, this is an old saying don't put all your eggs in one basket! Rule, carry only what you are going to spend that day in your pocket, the rest in secert place.

I don't know about GenCon, but over the past few years at MarCon more and more dealers were set up to take credit cards. I was really amazed. Last year I took very little cash to it as all the venders I were interested in were set up for credit cards.

You can always make a money belt, thats what I my dad did for traveling. Takes bare minimum of sewing skills. Basically a cloth envelope of sorts that you safety pin under your jeans, at the waste line. A simple button to close it. It's really easy to make, and is much better than stashing cash in your suitcase or whatever. Anytime you need more money you just walk into the bathroom, slip out a few bills, and then you are on your merry way.

Most of the big dealers probably take plastic, that'd be your WotC, WizKids, etc. Small publishers, most of the d20 ones, just took cash. I can't recall if they took checks or not, probably.

Take lots of cash.

On a quick guess, about 10% of the vendors (TOPS) at GenCon last year accepted credit cards. The rest COULD accept them, but they had to go accross the floor to another booth and run it through on that vendor's machine. (And assumedly give that vendor a share of the money).
