More reasons to love Monte

"Hmm.... In Rolemaster, there is a race EXACTLY like this called the Sibbicai, who happen to be somewhat feral humanoid canines, whose name is pronounced EXACTLY the same....."

Hmm... and who wrote the book where they appeared, and recently regained the rights to the material? :)

sorry about being late! ... but da Boss-2 is right! that is Funny :)

I'm looking forward to seeing how a seemingly minor change can cascade through the rules. I'm working on a homebrew setting right now in which the cure wounds spells will be extremely rare and I tell you -- it's affecting everything. It will be neat to see what happens if there are no elves or dwarves, if there are no spellbooks or wands with charges, if there are no material components, stuff like that. I may not like the actual end results of the changes he makes, but I'll certainly like reading about them and seeing what they turned into.

Well, if someone starts an "AU unofficial news page" and forum, at least I'll have my .sig picked out... :D

As for the book, I'll take a 'wait and see' attitude. As interesting as some of the ideas are, I don't at this time have a pressing need for an entirely new set of core material.

As Eric, what I WILL be interested in seeing is how the roles taken by the standard races and classes will be taken by the new races and classes.

Dwarves (the power hitters and damage soakers) are replaced by ????

Elves (graceful and magic-affinitied) are replaced by... Sibbicai?

Half-orcs are replaced by... ???

These are the kinds of questions I have.

God, I hope there are no answers to those questions. Just replacing the existing roles with something that looks different wouldn't be nearly as interesting as what I hope Monte is proposing.

"Okay, you mentioned some of the new classes, but what about the new races?

There are a lot of races in this book. The faen are diminutive magical creatures that can metamorphose into winged sprytes. There are giants, tall and noble, who serve as stewards of the realm. The mojh were once human, but they magically altered their own physical beings to resemble the dragons that they revere. Likewise, the sibeccai (SIB ba kai) were once beasts but the giants mystically elevated them to the status of intelligent humanoids -- but they retain aspects of their feral, canine natures. And there are many more. The only race that remains unchanged is the human race."

I agree -- I think we're going to see something a bit more radical than that. NOT using some of the assumptions of D&D will be just as important as introducing new assumptions.

I recall the idea of an alternate PHB with new classes/feats/spells/races being discussed on these boards various months ago... heh, actually I recall having a longish argument with someone (could be Edena, not sure though) about the title of such a book. The other poster wanted to call it "PHB 2", while I thought that it would confuse newbies and should therefore be called "Unearthed Arcana 3E" or something like that. I almost got it, it seems. :D

That would be me. I remember it too.

Dang. I just read the news at Monte Cook's and this is exactly what I wished for in that PHB 2-thread from some months ago. I'm baffled.

Well, either I inspired Monte or it's just a case of great minds thinking alike. The strange thing is that I've never met quite the opposition like I did in that very thread. In any event I have high hopes for this one. :)

I can't get over how cool Arcana Unearthed sounds. I hope we can convince KDLadage and crew to make Umbragia a stand-alone OGL game. :)
