More reasons to love Monte

See Monte. See Monte Write. Good Monty, good.

I'm going to be a dissenter.

I didn't like alt.ranger or alt.sorcerer. Alt.bard was alright in the way stale coffee when nothing else is available is.

Hence, I have little hope for Arcana Unearthed. That Monte thought the spell list was too powerful (read: WTF?) worries me. I worry at the disparity, ever-increasing that at low-levels a fighter 0wnz0rs a magic-user. The option Monte is taking is nerf it all and let God sort them out.

Meaning, I don't dig on having to wait levels for efficacy of character. Can I please have a first level mage that doesn't take a dive? Was Haste at 3rd level truly oveprowering? Was Shield? Often, it was all that kept magic-users alive

So, I'm nibbling on my nails wondering just how bad my 1st level wizardcorpse is going to fare in Arcana Unearthed; my wallet and I will pass.

It's kind'a funny, but I loved Monte's Rolemaster work.

I can understand your position but isn't it being a little harsh considering the book isn't even out yet and no one has seen the mechanics in it yet?

If your low-level wizards keep dying at a higher rate than the fighter-type classes than either the DM or the PC's are doing something wrong. :p Everyone should live/die at the same pace if all things are considered equal and each class has access to the proper resources. :)

Lets see... yeah, Monte, that was an absolutely amazing reply there. I'd have woken my roomate up if he wasn't playing Medal of Honor at 3:30 in the morning. And I did make enough noise laughing that he heard me through his enormous headphones. [Chuckle.] Amazing - simply... yeah, amazing. :D

Next - Kamard, coming on the heels of nearly splitting a side there, that was an absolutely wonderful post. I'm archiving this thread for several reasons, now - one, it's got information on something that I'm already incredibly ancy (sp?) for, and this is literally the first thing I've been so very worked up for since I started playing D&D. And that includes 3rd Ed. Ravenloft, a personal favorite of mine, regardless of the fact that I've yet to find a player willing to play a game there.

Anyway, if it's not obvious, yet... Monte, I've loved your alt.Bard, and I enjoy the alt.Sorcerer, though I've not used it. The ranger is about the same. (Admittedly, I've got to go check out the FFG Path of Magic and The Sigil's - notice I didn't write just 'Sigil,' huh? - Enchiridion of Mystic Music now, but I'm just not sure how I missed those before.) Ok, then - now that I'm kinda back on topic... If I have any reasonable understanding of what you're doing, then I'm so absolutely thrilled that... well... I can't really find the words to type how broadly I'm grinning.

[Stern voice.] Now, of course, you've got to deal with nearly a year of hype building around this, and some very angry fanboys if it's not absolutely perfect, you know! ;)

Instead of having the book come out in August, why not shoot for Gen Con in July? It would make a great debut book for Gen Con. Then gamers can be standing in line to get your new book instead of one produced by WotC. You would make lots of extra money that way too. :)

Obviously, Monte is big into the whole "retro/comeback" thing.

We all know he's just trying to provide a reason for Henry to put "C'mon, August!" back in his .sig! :D

Yes, I noticed - obviously you've been reading the "UserName Origins" thread. :)

And boy do I not envy Monte for the height at which the bar is gonna be set for this one. LOL.

You're right on both counts.

I'm being harsh to Monte. It's my abject horror at seeing that a sorcerer, already getting spells a level later than a wizard, now must wait two more levels to get Haste. Alt.sorcerer is bad juju.

It makes me wonder at what kind of powerlevels (read: character efficacy) we can expect from Monte. Do Fighters not learn how to use their swords until 3rd level? Yes, it's hyperbole. Forgive.

As for the second part... it's theorycraft. :) Compare a first level wizard shooting off Magic Missile twice to a Fighter being able to swing a sword infinitely. Hit points, armor class, and damage output is all in favor of the fighter. The only thing the wizard has going for it is the allure of higher levels (which it's rare to get to anyway).

That's muh'reasoning why I'm worried. It's an overreaction.

Mr. Cook:

This looks very, very interesting and it is something I am hoping lives up to the potential (and I certainly believe it will). I was recently discussing with the Jagged Edge Games Team the idea of, perhaps, re-releasing the UMBRAGIA setting as an OGL-only stand-alone RPG... the idea being that UMBRAGIA is D&D without the elves, dwarves, Vancian magic system, flat religions and so forth... You beat me to it. Good luck to you, sir!

BTW: have you ever looked over the UMBRAGIA material? I would love you comments on it. If you are not comfortable telling me about this here (or over on your site), e-mail is fine. Thanks.

I never buy books from D20 publishers. I've already got a few very good manuals that are sitting on the shelf because I don't have time to use them, or even read them. No point in making the stack higher.

But...

Aargh, a PHB-full of Monte goodness?

*wanders off looking for boosts to his Will save, 'cause he's going to need it*

KDLadage, I almost instantly thought of Umbragia when I read about Arcana Unearthed yesterday. I heartily encourage you to release Umbragia as an OGL stand-alone RPG. You have a buyer right here. :)
