I assumed it was Italian and pronounced it the way it should be for an Italian name spelled like that. The c followed by e or i is usually pronounced like English ch in Italian, but ironically the h in Italian turns it hard again.

Before your great-grandfather's time, when some immigration official guessed on the spelling, it was probably spelled Mucciello or Muciello then.

My personal favorite has been Gary Gygax's story about the kid who called him "Mr. Jy-jax" years ago.

I'm just glad you can't pipe in with MY little mistake regarding 'g' and 'j', because of Eric's grandma.
