Lalato: What's your forte? How about being the first judge for NPCs (CR 0-2)?

Well... I've been playing D&D off an on for 22 years, but I just started with 3e a few months ago. I can't honestly say that I have a favorite thing I want to concentrate on so NPCs would be fine with me.

This may be stating the obvious, but I assume that we're looking for NPCs that can provide decent plot hooks for role-playing in the city. Having said that, do we also want some "generic" NPCs, like a "typical" craftsman, fisherman, noble, constable/guard, etc?

Yes would like some generic NPCs, but since it'll be a contest, I'll leave it up to EN Worlders to create.

You can dig up the Iron DM thread to see how an example of a contest for NPC generation went. There were various categories used to judge. You can probably adjust them, tweaking here and there.

Ok, here's what I have in mind to do. Tell me please, if this is really contrary to what any of you were thinking, especially you, Krug.

Using several sources, I'd like to come up with a list of the types and numbers of each kind of shop we will need. These numbers are contingent upon the total city population, of course. Then I thought I'd come up with a few professional organizations, like a potter's guild, draper's guild, merchant's guild, and so forth, possibly with some rivalry and/or tensions. Then I thought I would create a template (possibly a Word document) that can be downloaded. Anyone who wants to submit a merchant or craft shop, with associated NPCs, will use this template so that we have some consistency in the finished product. All of the submitted entries that comply with the requirements can be voted upon. I think, though, that we the council should have final say over what gets included in the city and what doesn't.

So what do you folks think of this process? Will it work, or did you have something entirely different in mind?

See my post in the other thread. "A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe" from Expeditious Retreat Press has everything you need for that.

Why should this even be a contest in the first place? Obviously we should filter entries, but we have a whole city to fill up! Are we going to vote on one inn, one brewer, one weaponsmith, etc?

I would suggest we just wait and see what sort of entries we get, then weed out those categories that are somewhat too popular. I bet I'm not the only one who would like to submit a bar, and we can't have a whole city full of inns.

Hmm... "Magical Medieval Society" lists Tavern Keepers as having an incidence rate of 1 in 250. Sounds reasonable, perhaps a little on the high side. That means a city of 25,000 would have 100 inns. We may not get that many submissions, even for such a popular category!

Pah. They forgot about the dwarves! :D

I think the main reason for the contests would be to encourage the participation of EN Worlders. There should also be a contribution thread or call for entries. Just that contests ensure things get delivered in a much leaner time frame and there's an added incentive.

Sounds good, Minister Buttercup.:)

Once the thread is posted and you have a large number of ideas come in from participants I bet the data will start to form itself into groupings naturally.

Names, Geography and Trade.

Why don't you become the 'Minister of Geography' (yes I know it sounds odd), as in you have final say over the way it's run. It HAS to be a independent city-state of course.

BTW, Ministers, you can of course contribute as well. Just be mindful of all suggestions!

I'll take it!!! The pay is right:D

Let me think on this a bit.
So, from your point of view this would entail how the government is run?
Perhaps this should be titled: Minister of Governmental Affairs?

Covers the government of the citystate, its relationship to other areas including Kul Moran?

Would the map (geography) be under this or could be the responsibility of the Greydwarf. Head cartographer.:) He's seems very interested.

Ok I was in one of my sleepy moods so mixed up the two.

Graydwarf > Yeap, minister of Geography. He will determine the crucial layout of the place.

Wizard > Yeap, governmental 'affairs'. But things are messy, anarchistic, and somehow they manage to work themselves out. ;) Perhaps you might want to have a thread or contest to determine political organizations or peoples that run the city. I think there's quite a lot discussed already.

Sound good, Krug.
(Hey, you could be PRIME Minister!)

I'll set up a Governmental Affairs thread in this forum, starting with a abbreviated list of what has already been discussed.
Also, I just joined Enworld as a member!!! I work too much to get together and game as much as I used to so this site has been just great to keep me in the gaming mode.
