[Mor's End Discussion] Administration

Posts: 1410 Well ok then. One final question. Do you want me to include magic shops and so forth in the list of businesses we need? Magic, IMO, probably needs to be worked into the city from the ground up, if we're going to have a college of wizardry or anything like that. But we haven't assigned anyone to it, so I'm not sure what everyone thinks will work.

Buttercup, I have a suggestion. (Toss it if you think it's lame:)
Check out some Travel Guides. They do a great job of listing the most interesting/best places to eat, visit, sleep, purchase things at. Usually a sentence or two apiece and its address. Each entry usually has a point of differentiation from the others. And that goes with the modularity principle you'd posted earlier.

college of wizardry
I agree that magic should be built in... from the ground up... but let's keep in mind that it is far easier for a DM to add magic, than it is to remove magic.

Therefore, I think magic should be low-key... that means no Mage's Council or College of Wizardry... However, that doesn't rule out a powerful mage here and there that might be willing take on an apprentice. Wizards are just too powerful to concentrate them into a tightly knit group like a council or college. If they decide to take over a place, they can do it without much fuss.

This might even be a point of intrigue... Every once in a while some wizards decide to start a college or join together, but it quickly fizzles out due to bickering and backstabbing between the wizards. Usually over the oddest things. It's almost as if the wizards go momentarily insane.

Anyway... just thought... take it or leave it...

NPC Contest Rules...

OK... so the NPC contest rules will go like this...

--6 ingredients
--1 contest for each race in the PHB
--background must provide a plot hoot for player characters to explore
--minimum number of contestants is 3, maximum is 10
--use of each ingredient will be graded on a scale of 1 to 10. Plus up to 10 bonus points for an exceptionally good plot hook.
--contestants will have 72 hours to complete and post submissions.

-----------------------

Sample Contest:

Main NPC Race: Halfling

Ingredients:
feast of fish
lock of hair
a burned book
the yak man cometh
promises kept
a tall pint

Main NPC CR: <= (less than or equal to) 2

Antagonist NPC CRs: 2, 5, 8 (Antagonist NPCs are optional, if the background story doesn't require an Antagonist... so be it).

Rules: Use the above Race, Ingredients, and CR to create an NPC for the EN World City Project. The background and story you create around the NPC must provide a plot hook for player characters to explore in/around the city of Mor's End.

Contestants: Open call for contestants will remain open for 72 hours. We need a minimum of 3 contestants, and a maximum of 10. Once the contestants are chosen, they will have 72 hours to submit their NPC to the board. Judging will take no longer than 48 hours.

Submission format:
Background Story (ingredients should be bolded)
Stat Block for Main NPC
Stat Block for Antagonist NPC for each CR level listed above.
Stat Block for other NPCs as needed by background of story.

----------------------------

Let me know if this contest format is good. If so, I'll try to whip up a real contest ASAP.

Hmm Lalato, sorry I think I gave you the wrong idea when I refered to the Iron DM contest. Actually, at this stage, I think lets just make it an unrestricted open call for submissions. As in there's no need for 'ingredients' but anyone submitting should comply with statblock and fulfil the template. Eg: Name, Stats, Description, Role, History, Plot Hooks.

I think a bunch of characters with the same ingredients isn't quite what we need now.

As for time, how about 10 days or so?

After NPCs, I see a Shops thread, and after that something else. So we'll slowly, gently, fill in the town. How does that sound?

That's pretty much what I was thinking too. Should we come up with a standard template (yeah, so I'm anal) for NPCs? It might make it easier to compare entries.

What I mean by template is a format like so:

NPC NAME
Class & Level
Ability Scores
Saves
BAB
Feats
Skills
Weapons with their stats
Equipment
Descriptive paragraph, including one plot hook.

Not that it has to be in that format, just that, whatever format we pick, all entries should have the info in that order. Makes it easy to see if something is missing.

Also, shops probably have to include NPCs, since Krug's House of Fine Armor won't be worth much if we don't know anything about Krug. ;) Probably he's a low to mid level expert, and the stats can be streamlined, but it would be nice to know how many employees he has, his family composition, and who his business rivals are. From there the plot hooks will flow more easily.

I was thinking that, along with my introduction and template, I would include a sample shop (complete w/ owner NPC) as an example of what I'm looking for. Sound good to everyone? Or not?

Looks up with pie in his face... and says, "Ha!... and Double Ha!" ;)

Sorry about the contest misunderstanding, Krug. Instead of a contest, it will just be an open call... Here are the guidelines...

-------------------

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The EN World City Project is looking for colorful characters to people the region in and around the city of Mor's End: City Guards, Maidens, Fishermen, Craftsmen, Nobles, Thieves, Holy Women, Merchants, Street Vendors, Actors, Singers, Street Urchins, Drunkards, Gluttons, Liars, Cheats, Courtiers, Henchmen and Libertines.

In short, we want you to help us populate the city. Here are the guidelines for submissions.

--Only races from the PHB may be used.

--The characters background/history must provide a plot hook(s) for player characters to investigate.

--Plot Hooks must take place within the region of Enheim (where Mor's End is located). This can include the city of Mor's End, the mountains of Kul Moren, the area around Lake Enoria (lake is about the size of Lake Ontario in North America), The Swamps of Entropy to the south of the city, Or along the Mor River. See Geography Thread for details.

--If appropriate for the NPC/Plot Hook, please include stats for multiple levels (For Example... 0, 3, 6, 9).

--Provide stats for all other major NPCs central to the plot hook. If appropriate, stats should be included for multiple levels (For Example... 0, 3, 6, 9).

--Do use d20 Standard statblocks: http://www.d20statblock.org/standard/examples.html
A useful tool: http://mwtools.thyle.net/sb_gen.html

--This is an open call. You may submit as many NPC/Plot Hooks as you like.

--Submission deadline is 10 days from today.

Threads that might help you devise plot hooks...

Government Thread, Geography Thread, Trade Thread, etc.. [links to those threads would be provided]

Submission Format:
NPC Name
Description/Background/Plot Hook
Stat Block
Special Equipment and Weapons

If multiple levels are being included, please place those stat blocks here...

Stat Block (Level 3)
Special Equipment and Weapons

Stat Block (Level 6)
Special Equipment and Weapons

Stat Block (Level 9)
Special Equipment and Weapons

Other Major NPC Info:
Name
Brief Description
Stat Block
Special Equipment and Weapons

For multiple levels, use same format as above.

----------------

I figure I'll post an initial request for volunteers. That request will stay up for a maximum of 3 days. The minimum number of volunteers will be 5. There will be no maximum. If we have at least 5 volunteers the "contest" will continue with the 10 day deadline for submissions.

OK... Let me know if this is better. Feel free to edit any of the above.

Regarding the NPC contest and a possible upcoming shop contest... Shops are going to have NPC's associated with them! Should we do the shop contest first? That will also allow NPC's to have a plot hook with an existing shop.

For example, I posted an idea for an Inn in the poll thread in General. Essentially a place for my old PC to retire to. How would I enter this as a submission? Should I enter good ol' Conaill as a retired adventurer & bar owner NPC in the first contest, then submit an NPC-less Inn for the second contest? Or can I just skip the NPC contest and enter the whole Inn with bartender, maids and Conaill as owner, patron and occasional drunk-in-the-corner?

Sorry For the delay, I've been away for a funeral (:() so I've got some catching-up to do.

I think I saw I had been promoted to Minister of Geography.
Is it still the case? If so I'll start reading back all the posts I missed to come up with a more accurate map.

My condolances:(

Yes, that IS the case, if you want it.
