Mortality Radio

I'm moderately tech savvy but I don't have an iPod (or any portable MP3 player for that matter). Is it still possible to listen to Podcasts on your computer? If so, then there are a few I might download to listen to.

Podcast is just an (annoying) term that refers to a broadcast you download and play - whether on a computer, portable music device, or the like.

So yes, you can download and listen to them on your computer.

And please think of the children before using the term "podcast".

Thanks for that enrious. Man, I always assumed that it only worked on iPods for some reason. There is so much good content that I've missed out on!

I miss the show very much. Like Steve said, it was a great way to spend some Friday nights. I gobbled up much pork fried rice while listening to those shows. (mmm...Chinese...)

Actually, it refers to the feed to Apple's Podcasting subscription service in iTunes (or any other "podcasting" subscription tool). When you run iTunes with a podcast flagged as subscribed, it will automatically search to see if there is a new episode, download it and throw it on your iPod.

The term used to bug me too though - until I got an iPod and started using the subscription flag :)

A podcast certainly can be manually downloaded though - and played on any computer. And yes - you can use iTunes subscription service on a computer without having an iPod to dowlnoad to - if you are so inclined. If you have Quicktime installed on your computer - it's a good chance there is a copy of iTunes lurking on there anyways...

That context I have no problems with it - it's when used to generically refer to any such downloadable broadcast that I dig in my heels.

Still - huzzah to Apple for creating the next Xerox.

See - I agree that the engineering of the show may be far superior to Mortality, but I still feel that I got much more game-related goodness from it. DLI is, IMO, just too full of stuff other than gaming related talk.

While I enjoyed the live particpatory aspect of Mortality Raadio, trading off the poor sound quality with the more thoughtful presentation behind the Dragon's Landing Inn podcast...

is really no contest at all. The Dragon's Landing Inn podcasts are better produced and far preferable. Chuck and Lonnie have great rapport and considerable experience at this now. Together with some expensive microphones and reasonable mixing equipment - well - lets say you'll be pleasantly surprised at what a difference quality audio and thoughtful commentary makes.

I think the term pre-dates Apple's support for the format, actually. Before iTunes had a "podcast" tab, you had to use a third-party "podcatcher" program to get the same functionality.

Podcasts are just ordinary audio downloads that you can subscribe to via an RSS feed. The only connection to the iPod is that it was the proliferation of portable digital audio devices that increased people's use for and interest in non-musical downloadable audio content. When you're in front of a computer, there's a good chance you're reading something, and thus not very open to listening to people talk. But iPods and similar devices let people listen to stuff they downloaded off the Internet while they're driving, walking, riding the bus, etc. So, as all those pairs of white headphones became ubiquitous, there was suddenly a lot more room out there for downloadable "radio" shows.

Mortality was a great way to spend Saturday mornings (Australia time) with some friends, especially the interaction of the regulars in the chatroom.

For those wishing an update on Adlon and smaug, read on.

Smaug did lose his house in Hurricane Charlie a few years ago now. He has since moved to a new location (unsure actually where he is), but I know he is well. He posted about half a year ago now that he has his own blog. Also I know that he will have a Goodman Games DCC module out soon (if it is not already out).

Adlon lost his roof in the same hurricane, and this effectively caused the close of Mortality Radio. He had to take a second job to afford the repairs on the roof as the US government did not follow up on its promise to fulfill insurance claims by the hurricane.
Adlon spent A LOT of time on WOW as well during his relaxation time. I spoke to him a few weeks ago on the phone to discuss some things for the Mortality website and we caught up.

Adlon has had some health issues which put a lot of things on hold. It looks like his health is on the mend and life is improving. However I do not think we will be seeing a revival of Mortality Radio. He has stopped playing WOW and is looking at taking up tabletop gaming again as life improves. At the moment he is improving some of the features of his site and we might see more of him on the forums in the future.
