Most Popular Generic System Variants/Settings

Just curious what are the most popular/best variants and settings of the "generic" game systems.

For example, I'd be surprised if Champions isn't the most commonly played Hero system variant/setting/etc.

For GURPS, I have no idea.

Icons seems to be a very popular FATE descendant, what gives it competition?

What are some others?

If I understand you correctly, you are asking what each system's most well-known game world or setting is?

If so, I'd say:

Palladium system - Rifts
Savage Worlds system - Deadlands
Cortex system - Serenity
World of Darkness system - Vampire
Alternity system - Star*Drive
Basic system - Call of Cthulhu
FUDGE system - ?
Tri-stat (BESM) system - ?
Rolemaster - Middle Earth (or Shadow World)
d20 modern - Star Wars (?)
Pathfinder - Golarion
Runequest - Gloranthium (sp?)
GURPS - ? (I think the idea was for it to be truly generic)

Yeah, and/or what the system is best at (mecha, far future, sword & sorcery, supers, etc.)

Your list is a good start, but I'm interested in 2nd and 3rd opinions as well as filling in some of the blanks. And I'm really curious about what are the best settings/add-ons for GURPS.

The GURPS settings I enjoyed most were a martial arts themed homebrew setting- GURPSs martial arts rules are fairly decent- and their take on V:tM.

Similarly, I view HERO's most useful supplement is ALSO their expansion of martial arts moves in The Ultimate Martial Artist books (in each edition)- simply the most useful book besides the core rule book for me. Regardless of setting, that one ALWAYS finds a use.

I think generics, by their very nature, cover a lot of ground. But I tend to use Savage Worlds for modern settings or games with an adventure/intrigue feel.
