The Archaeologist actually replaces Bardic perofrmance entirely. So you could easily make a Bard with no singing, dancing, or performance of any other sort required. It's one of the Archetypes that takes the Bard far from the concept of Wandering Minstrel. Think Indiana Jones.

As for Bardic Knowledge it doesn't work nearly the same in Pathfinder as in 3.5. It simply adds a flat bonus to Knowledge skills, kind of hard to hate. If Bardic Knowledge is the problem there's plenty of other archetypes that replace Bardic Knowledge.

I'd take a look at a Magus with the Blade Bound archetype. A perfect blend of Fighter and Wizard. The spell casting isn't too challenging to comprehend since you have a limited pool to draw from. The real beauty from this class, comes from the special abilities you get with the Magus Arcana, which let you enhance the few spells you have and the Arcane Pool which gives you "free" temporary magic bonuses to your sword.
