Mounted combat is the weird

OK,
Mounted combat looks odd for any number of reasons. This all comes from a conversation with a friend with the books, but I'm fairly sure I've got this all right.

#1 It looks like the MM, PHB and DMG never quite got on the same page. Each appear to have different, but non-contradictory rules for mounted combat. For example, the PHB says if you have the mounted combat feat, you can use the special ability of the mount. The MM says you can use it if you are high enough level. The DMG says that you must both have the feat _and_ be of high enough level. Weird.

(Being on a warhorse, for example, give you +5 damage on a charge. But only if you have the mounted combat feat and are at least level 3.)

#2 3e made the dog mounted halfling a a staple of the game. Dogs aren't in the MM apparently (there are "hounds" but these are things like hell hounds).

I love what they've done with mounted combat. It's simple, and makes a difference. Makes me want to create a heavy mounted knight type!

And per the DMG rules, a small halfling can't ride a Medium dog any more. :(
