D&D 5E Mounts and Questions

Flicker the Flareon

Champion of Alola
About 10-5 questions about mounts.

1. Ostriches are rideable in real life, why aren't there ostriches in DND?

2. If you awakened your mount and you're friends with it now, then you have an argument, and the cleric uses a beneficial spell on you both, does the mount get affected even if it might no longer be considered your ally?

3. What really happens if your Nightmare FoWP (Figurine of Wondrous Power) disobeys you, you mount it, and the 2 of you go to Hades? What happens there? Why on Hades and not on Avernus, since the nigtmare is a fiendish being?

4. So you're part of a long-lived species and raised a dragon from an egg. The dragon is intelligent, but regards you as someone friendly and lets you ride it. Does this override "intelligent creatures act independently" from the 5e Basic Rules?

5. Does your (awakened) mount have attunement slots? Otherwise, how can it benefit from stuff like a Periapt of Health?

6. So a bad guy permanently polymorphed you into an intelligent mouse/weasel/squirrel etc. Does your mount still accept you guiding it? Does it not recognize you?

7. What happens if you cast 9th-level geas on the BBEG's mount and command it "to serve you loyally", but the BBEG themselves escapes and later casts 9th-level dispel magic on the mount?

Please help me.

1. Ostriches are rideable in real life, why aren't there ostriches in DND?
There are lots of animals in real life that aren't in DND. You just have to stat them out if you want them.

2. If you awakened your mount and you're friends with it now, then you have an argument, and the cleric uses a beneficial spell on you both, does the mount get affected even if it might no longer be considered your ally?
Well, Awakened has nothing to do with a spell benefiting you and a former mount. So... I am not certain of the thrust of your question.

3. What really happens if your Nightmare FoWP (Figurine of Wondrous Power) disobeys you, you mount it, and the 2 of you go to Hades? What happens there? Why on Hades and not on Avernus, since the nigtmare is a fiendish being?
Because the nightmare is bound by the magic into the magic item it is part of. It is trapped in a manner, and returns to Hades where it was fashioned? 🤷‍♂️ If it could return to Avernus, it doesn't seem like it is bound to the item it is part of.

4. So you're part of a long-lived species and raised a dragon from an egg. The dragon is intelligent, but regards you as someone friendly and lets you ride it. Does this override "intelligent creatures act independently" from the 5e Basic Rules?
Nope. Just because it is friendly and lets you ride it, doesn't make it any less intelligent. So, it would still act independently, but hopefully as a helpful friend. :)

5. Does your (awakened) mount have attunement slots? Otherwise, how can it benefit from stuff like a Periapt of Health?
Every creature technically has attunement slots. It doesn't even need to be awakened, technically.

6. So a bad guy permanently polymorphed you into an intelligent mouse/weasel/squirrel etc. Does your mount still accept you guiding it? Does it not recognize you?
Can you communicate with it?
Is it intelligent enough to understand what has happened to you?
Does it somehow know your scent or something?

This is entirely up to the DM.

7. What happens if you cast 9th-level geas on the BBEG's mount and command it "to serve you loyally", but the BBEG themselves escapes and later casts 9th-level dispel magic on the mount?
Nothing. Dispel Magic will not work on a 9th-level Geas, only a remove curse, greater restoration, or wish spell ends it.

This is an example of a specific rule (geas at 9th-level) over the general rule of dispel magic.

Please help me.
Hope that helps with some things at least. :)

About 10-5 questions about mounts.

1. Ostriches are rideable in real life, why aren't there ostriches in DND?
They didn't make the cut. There's only so many pages in the MM before the cost of printing makes the whole thing unprofitable.
2. If you awakened your mount and you're friends with it now, then you have an argument, and the cleric uses a beneficial spell on you both, does the mount get affected even if it might no longer be considered your ally?
An argument? Still an ally. If it decides to leave the party, no longer an ally.
3. What really happens if your Nightmare FoWP (Figurine of Wondrous Power) disobeys you, you mount it, and the 2 of you go to Hades? What happens there? Why on Hades and not on Avernus, since the nigtmare is a fiendish being?
Fiends come form many planes, include Avernus and Hades, as well as all 666 layers of the Abyss. As for what happens when you get there: depends on what sort of fiends you run into first.
4. So you're part of a long-lived species and raised a dragon from an egg. The dragon is intelligent, but regards you as someone friendly and lets you ride it. Does this override "intelligent creatures act independently" from the 5e Basic Rules?
There are special rules for intelligent mounts, so those would apply.
5. Does your (awakened) mount have attunement slots? Otherwise, how can it benefit from stuff like a Periapt of Health?
Yes it has 3 attunement slots.
6. So a bad guy permanently polymorphed you into an intelligent mouse/weasel/squirrel etc. Does your mount still accept you guiding it? Does it not recognize you?
It may or may not recognize you (maybe you tell it something only you would know) - if it does, it would accept you as a rider.
7. What happens if you cast 9th-level geas on the BBEG's mount and command it "to serve you loyally", but the BBEG themselves escapes and later casts 9th-level dispel magic on the mount?
As noted, dispel magic wouldn't work. But if the geas were removed, it would no longer serve you and probably hate your guts.

Goblin Queen (She/Her/Hers)
1. Ostriches are rideable in real life, why aren't there ostriches in DND?
Only so much page space. You could probably reskin an axe beak or something if you want.
2. If you awakened your mount and you're friends with it now, then you have an argument, and the cleric uses a beneficial spell on you both, does the mount get affected even if it might no longer be considered your ally?
If an awakened mount is still letting you ride it, I’m pretty sure you’re allies.
3. What really happens if your Nightmare FoWP (Figurine of Wondrous Power) disobeys you, you mount it, and the 2 of you go to Hades? What happens there? Why on Hades and not on Avernus, since the nigtmare is a fiendish being?
An adventure is what happens!
4. So you're part of a long-lived species and raised a dragon from an egg. The dragon is intelligent, but regards you as someone friendly and lets you ride it. Does this override "intelligent creatures act independently" from the 5e Basic Rules?
No.
5. Does your (awakened) mount have attunement slots? Otherwise, how can it benefit from stuff like a Periapt of Health?
Periapt of Health doesn’t require attunement...?
6. So a bad guy permanently polymorphed you into an intelligent mouse/weasel/squirrel etc. Does your mount still accept you guiding it? Does it not recognize you?
DM discretion. Personally I would say an intelligent mount could probably still recognize you and allow you to ride on it while it acts independently (as intelligent mounts do). If it’s a controlled mount, it almost certainly doesn’t recognize you, and also mice, weasels, and squirrels are just not physically able to control a mount, any more than they could drive a car.
7. What happens if you cast 9th-level geas on the BBEG's mount and command it "to serve you loyally", but the BBEG themselves escapes and later casts 9th-level dispel magic on the mount?
EDIT: Nevermind, I had forgotten that Geas can only be ended by certain spells and Dispel Magic isn’t one of them.
