Mounts, How do they work?

Rineran Foxfire

First Post
So Im a Human Ranger, my DM let me choose Roc as my companion at lvl 4. According to the Core Rulebook a Roc companion is a medium creature a little bit larger than a human. Can I use my Roc as a mount at current level or do I have to wait until he becomes Large?

In order to serve as a mount an animal has to be at least one size category larger than its rider, so you'd have to wait until the Roc becomes large.

You can use the roc as a mount, but if you are meduim sized, you have to wait till the roc is large size.

This means level 10 is when you can ride it.

There is another option that will cut some time out of how long till you can ride it. Boon Companion - Pathfinder_OGC

It will put your effective druid level up to your character level assuming you have not multi-classed too much (ie. no more then 1 non ranger level)

then kindly tell your dm to reconsider, the whole point of dnd is to make it up yourself, the books are just helpful guide lines.

I think that BS. Sure D&D is a outlet for creative passion but it is by no means a make up the rules yourself kind of game. There is a reason why people buy Pathfinder books. It's so they can use the game mechanics and rules set up by people who know what they're doing. If you want to play D&D your way then don't use preexisting templates or games.

I'm with the DM on this one, core only is a good rule if the DM isn't comfortable with new splatbooks and the unbalancing that may be the result of allowing everything.

You're not supposed to be able to fly much at lower levels anyway, so wait until large sounds good to me.

If that is your stance, Rineran shouldn't even have a roc as their companion.

It is also from a splat book (Bestiary) and not one of the "normal" ranger companions.

I would put it to your DM this way, they are allowing the Roc as the companion, can they also allow a feat that really only makes the roc as good as if a druid had grabbed it. You still couldn't ride it till level 7 anyway, so "flight" is not really an issue imo

My stance is that the DM decides if he allows such a companion or not, and also what kind of feats and scources for them are allowed. This feat is clearly marked as "not part of the core rules."

Anyway, it looks like the OP got his answer already, and that he is in agreement with his DM. No point beating a dead Roc.

Also, getting flight at level 7 as a non-spellcaster, and continual no-cost flight to boot, is absolutely an issue.
