I can't believe that nobody's mentioned Lord of the Rings!

Pppft.. obviously a Star Wars rip-off.

I mean, come on, look at Gandalf - you don't see a slight resemblance to obiwon?

And you just know Sauron is going to be Frodo's father...

Furn, for a movie that you can practically read the book along with...

Try the 1989 (or 90?) version of Treasure Island... The one with Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins. It is an absolutely beautiful adaptation of the book. Great sets, great costumes, great actors and dialogue straight out of the book. Scenes that look like they were taken straight out of Wyeth's illustrations.

I recommend it.

The Last Unicorn...
The Postman...
Starship Troopers...
The Neverending Story...

Would all be good picks for this sort of discussion.

I'm obviously a bit late here but I would also recommend:

American Psycho - The book was so much better than the film, but it is a really complicated book to convert and on the whole they did a fairly good job.

Do androids dream of electric sheep? / Bladerunner - I've just finished reading this and was really surprised just how different to the film it is. Both book and film are fantastic though.

I'd also suggest The Bone Collector (book by Jeffery Deaver) as an example of how to take a clever, well written, gripping and frightening story and turn it into hollywood tripe. :)
