Movies that should have sucked, but didn't

For my personal tastes... Austin Powers.

I don't like that kind of film. But I was walking home (I think around 9pm?) by the local second-run movie theatre and it was playing... and decided "why not?" I thought it was hilarious. :)

Since Fight Club is one of my favorite books (I've reread it an unhealthy amount of times), I naturally assumed that Hollywood would *completely* miss the point and ruin it.

Imagine my surprise to discover that not only did they 'get' the source material, they managed to 'improve' upon it (given the constraints of translating from print to film).

Oh, and Mystery Men.

"You threw a fork at him, Jeff."

Below. My brother and my fiance wanted to rent it because it was directed by the same guy who did Pitch Black. I wanted to rent Spirited Away since it was my birthday, but they talked me into it. I don't know if it was even released to theatres in Canada, but it was good.

Big Trouble

I normally avoid Tim Allen movies like the plague, but my family really liked it so I had this marked down in the "things I'll watch on cable" checklist. Well, it was on Starz yesterday and I sat down and watched it in between cleaning the house. And it was pretty funny. I found it clever how they took all these random events and plots and made them dovetail into each other. It also really captured Dave Barry's attitude in his columns (if not the novel he wrote; I haven't read it).

Frailty

This movie was in theaters for, like, 7 nanoseconds. I remember seeing the previews and thinking that Matthew McConaughey and Bill Paxton thrillers don't really light my fire. But I was bored the other night, so I caught most of it on cable and thought it was really cool. This is a must-rent now so I can see the quarter of it I missed. I won't give away any of the plot, but it had a great twist ending.

Galaxy Quest
Not a big Tim Allen fan, and I thought they would just be going for the obvious. I expected it to be for Star Trek what Spaceballs wa for Star Wars. Instead, it had a real story behind it, good acting, and was a hell of a lot of fun.

Can't Hardly Wait
I expected it to be just another teen sex comedy, and instead found it very entertaining, with characters that I could actually relate to from my own high school days.

The Parent Trap (remake)
I really enjoyed the 1960's original, and thought that updating the story would just ruin a classic. Instead, I found that it kept enough of the original story and made it work for the late 1990's, plus the adults this time were not just for comic relief but were well played and key to the storyline. Good acting all around too.

Rat Race- No movie advertised on a mall marque is ever worth the spit i fling at it. Plus it looked like a knock-off of those old "Magnificent Men and Thier *" movies i used too love as a child. It is one of those movies and it is perfect.

a second for the New Guy. thought i would hate it. Have no idea what i was doing in the theatre alone that day. Couldn't stop laughing

Robocop. I thought I had that movie pegged as a piece of crap waiting to happen, but ended up really enjoying it, especially the way the not-so-distant future was portrayed.

The 13th Warrior: This movie went through one of the most problematic productions in movie history, and was released much later than originally planned. Still, the movie turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable, and I watch my DVD of it quite often. An excellent blood-soaked action/adventure movie with a great cast and exciting battle scenes.
