RE: Horowitz death

I just knew that D&D would be brought up in connection with this murder. I was watching CNN, and a correspondent cut in with news that the teen in question had recently lost his sister in a car accident. As I watched, I thought to myself, "first they'll blame the drugs, then D&D". The drugs were brought up, but thankfully, no reference to gaming.

The main reason this even came up.

3-4 24 Hour News Channels (or are there more now?), and only so many (real) experts to go around. Only so many things you can say with X amount of information.

So, in order to fill up what 60-80 hours of coverage spread between all the news stations? You have to pull stuff out of your ___. Some guy's trying to fill up air space. All the known elements about the case have been mentioned 10,000 times already, and all teh realistic possibilites 10,001 times, so now we go all the UNLIKELY possibilites. This 'expert' is trying to come remember EVERY reason a teenager has EVER been arrested/charged/suspected of commiting murder.

The D&D 80's Satanic stuff just popped up in his head (plus the Videogame angle was probablly put forth within 10 minutes of the kid getting picked up). If he'd remembered a case about a kid accused of killing someone because Barney told him to, he'd have piped up with Violent TV is the cause.

So, he's just filling air-time. Of course, this kid's might not even be aware D&D exists. But, hey! Why let facts get in the way of good rumours. Plus, trying to fill a 10 minute spot after all the REAL experts have smacked every REAL possibility to death means you have to be creative.

Simple as that, someone trying to fill air time with any thing that came into his head.

Clearly CARS are to blame for this tragedy.

Based on a statistic that I'm completely pulling out of my ass, 93.6% of all murderers have ridden in a CAR within 48 hours of having committed their crime!

No, it was shoes! All murderers wear shoes!

When, lord, when are all these vicious shoe companies going to get the message? How many innocents must die before the Nikes and Adidases of the world stop peddling their murderer-enabling wares? How much blood is enough?

Why single out the right wing? Especially since the LEFT wing are the ones with a very vocal and high-profile history of demonizing D&D (Tipper Gore) and video games (Joseph Lieberman).

Because most attacks against Goths and D&D come from the right wing and from religious fundamentalists (who tend to vote right wing). It's worth pointing out that neither Tipper Gore nor Joseph Lieberman have probably ever been called left wing by anyone actually on the left. They both represent fairly conservative elements within the Democratic party.

And those on the right who speak out against D&D don't represent the majority of the Republican party, either.

To try to make it sound as if only one US political party is anti-D&D (while the other major political party isn't) is silly. And innacurate.

Spread the blame, I say!

I don't think he was trying to lay the blame at Republicans since it's not clear that all Republicans are the right wing regious groups that attack D&D. The main attacks have come from that quarter and that is where the main attention should be directed.
It might be worth revisting the post where Del pasted in the text of his message on CNN. Nowhere did he equate right wing religious groups with the Republican party. You are the only person who has done so to this point.

The fact is that games draw attacks from both sides of the political debate. Rather than worry about what direction the criticism is coming from, I think it would be more productive to present a calm, united front such as was done in the Mike Stackpole's Pulling Report
