Multiclass XP problem

gfunk

First Post
I'm making a human Fighter 1/Paladin 2/Marshal 3 for a new FR campaign.

Was thinking about using the Paladin of Freedom variant from UA.

Anyway, will this PC suffer XP penalties for multi-classing and/or be limited in the Paladin levels he can take? IDHMBIFOM, so I don't know which orders allow Paladins to multi-class.

Any help would be appreciated.

No XP penalties as listed for a Human, regardless of order taken up to that point (Fighter 1/ Marshal 3/ Paladin 2; for example) as nowhere in the line would any non-favored class be more than 1 level out of sync with the rest.

However, later XP penalties might accrue - for instance, if you went for Ftr 1 / Paladin 3 / Marshal 3 at your next level, then you have a penalty as Ftr-1 isn't within one level of all non-favored classes.

However, if you go for Ftr 1 / Pal 2 / Mar 4, you don't have any XP penalties (marshall, being the highest, counts as favored, and the other two are within one level of each other)

The normal paladin has his multiclassing restriction listed under the "Ex-Paladins" section in the PHB. Given that, and given that corresponding "Ex-Paladin" listings aren't given for the variant paladins in UA, it can be somewhat ambiguous if those variants can multiclass.

The only real text in the book that I think could be said to making a ruling on this is that each paladin variant says "has all the standard paladin class features, except as noted below." I interpret that to mean that the variant paladins do face the same multiclassing restrictions.

paladins of helm, tyr or torm can multiclass into fighter freely. but as mentioned: when human or half-elf, ignore the highest level and if 2 classes are more than one level apart, take the appropriate XP penalty.

blaine.
