I like for there to be some in-game explanation as to why the character suddenly has some new abilities, but this generally isn't a problem. Usually the character was headed a certain direction and the new class only makes sense.
For example, in a PBeM I ran the rogue took several levels of rogue, but along the whole way played that rogue as pretty aggressive and tending to be in the thick of things. He even kept his STR up there to make him a tad more to the thuggish side. The last level he took as fighter and it just fit for him. It only made sense that over time he picked up some of those types of skills and tactics.
No training required though in my games. As mentioned above the characters will usually have played their characters in a way that the different class only fits.
