Multiple charm person

If a humanoid is under a charm person spell, what happens if a subsequent charm person is successfully cast on them? How do other people resolve this? Options I can think of are that the later charm replaces the earlier; or that the later takes no effect; or that both are in effect at the same time (which might lead to a seriously conflicted individual, but too bad...).

Even the classic D&D rules point out that multiple castings of the same spell don't stack their effects, they only overlap the durations. If two different magic-users attempted to charm a single target, I'd rule that the second charm spell overrules and replaces the first if the target fails his saving throw to resist it; whereas the original charm remains in place if this save is made.
