Multiple spell slot-spells

The Proconsul

I just had an idea. What do you think of spells that make it possible to expend multiple spell slots for additional effects? Obviously, these additional effects must be weaker than a whole new spell. Otherwise, it would be just a way of casting much faster.

Also, I suppose these spells would have to be limited to either people perparing spells, or people casting them spontaneously, as spontaneous casters would profit much more from them.

Um... can't really think of a reason why you might want to do that. Do you have any examples?

My reasoning is if the spell is more powerful then it should just be bumped up in level. If it deals with something that is less combat oriented and more towards creating a certain effect I increase the casting time dramatically, like a ritual (to take a full day or more).

I suppose you could make a feat that takes 2 slots that would increase the duration/damage/range of the spell instead of increasing the spells level for feats like enlarge, etc.

There were some house rules for using additional spell slots to cast
metamagically enhanced spells. Like: "by spending X additional spell slots of the same level of the spell you cast, you can apply a +X metamagic on it"
or a more flexible "by spending (X)times the level of a spell A in slots levels, you can apply a +X metamagic to A (which you must spend his normal slot for)" (bad wording, I hope you get the idea)

using the 1st rule, a Wiz5 can cast an enlarged fireball if he uses 2 3rd level slots (assuming he has either 16+ int or an evocation specialization)
using the 2nd rule, he can do the same by spending the normal 3rd level slot for fireball, plus 1 2nd level slot and 1 first level slot.

I get the idea. But I didn't really mean that.

For example, I thought of a spell similar to detect thoughts, with the added ability to daze (or something similar), by expending 2 spell slots, but retaining the normal casting time. This would NOT depend on any metamgic things (though I think that would make sense, too).

So +1 metamagics are free? By the examples you gave, I could pay for an Enlarged Fireball with just the single level 3 slot I was already using.

I think you mean "X*A ADDITIONAL slot levels". So an Empowered Fireball would take 3 level 3 slots total.

Yes, this is what I meant, thanks.

I did say the wording was bad. :)
But the examples were using enlarge (+1) and not empower(+2), and thus were right.

Not that I've playtested this stuff, though....
