There is a new product coming out in the next few months that will enable us to make multi touch tables on the cheap. It is called leap motion.

Yes, you can put the Leap anyway you want. If you put it on its side, facing you, you could turn e.g. your table into a multi touch surface (for 2D art design for example). Mount it on top of your screen, facing down, to turn your screen into a "multi touch screen".
