I can not honestly see a person turning down a good set of stats for the sake of role-playing.
I do it if it fits the character. Statistically, the most powerful character doesn't have any greater chance of survival than any other. But only in roleplaying-oriented campaigns, otherwise it will get me killed. In other campaigns, I play optimized characters and still have fun.

Only, I don't play munchkinized characters in strictly roleplaying campaigns (because it is not fun and it annoys the others) unless that's exactly the character concept I have in mind, and I don't play weak-but-cool characters in powergaming campaigns because I know I'll simply get killed.

In somewhere-in-between campaigns, I play whatever I feel like.

Snoweel, I know you're from Australia, and you know you're from Australia - but how many people areound here know?

Gee thanks Nemm.

It could've been fun to see how far I could push the guy before springing the punchline.

Anyway, I guess you've got a job to do...

Eternal Knight - I was just kidding cuz. My mum's Australian, as are my brothers and sisters and myself.

I just thought it would be cool to stir you a bit.

I guess my sense of humour needs a readjustment...

Nothing against Australia (mate), it's just Australians that I have a problem with.

You people are rude, agressive and self-obsessed.

I guess that's what comes from being descended from convicts...

"Ok, you have a major problem (racism). Get lost , mate."

I don't know if I'd call his statement "racism." Convicts don't constitute a "race."

I think his remark reveals his ignorence, notice he's from Stockholm.

Personally, I'm more offended at the idea that australians are regarded as "rude, agressive and self-obsessed."

That is how AMERICANS are supposed to be stero-typed! What's going on here? Are the Australians giving us a run for the championship of rudness, self-absorbtion and agression?

Looks like I'll have to go smack some Europeans around to shore up our good ol' reputation! Just let me watch my shows first....

BTW, I agree that munchkin bashing is out of hand. I wrote a rant in another thread last week about how people who call other people munchkins are shallow, sissy gamers who like to belittle other people in an effort to inflate their own egos.

Unless you ENJOY rolling up a new charcter every week, you have no business calling someone else a "munchkin."

I only skimmed this thread, but I noticed at least one person talknig about how characters that hve maxed out skills are "munchkin." I disagree. That's what the system is about. Max ranks in Hide + cloak of elven kind + elf dex bonus + bracers of Dex is NOT a "munchkin" way to play. Its the way the game was intended to be played in the first place.

Nope, Americans win, hands down.

Darkness,

One might also note that Snoweel is from Australia. He just lives in Sweden now.
That's exactly the reason why I told people to read Nemm's post:

Listen, if we're going to have this debate we should do one of two things with the nomenclature:

1. Use two neutral terms for the "sides" involved. For example, Power-Players vs. Role-Players seems good. There's always the Roll vs. Role terminology.

2. If we have to use a pejorative term like "Munchkin," let's match it up with a similarly disparaging term for the other side; say, "Master Thespians" or "Dice Squelchers."

Every game, I think, has certain amount of rolling and a certain amount of role-ing. At least, I'm sure my game does. Combat relieves the tedium of role-playing, and then an hour later we have role-playing relieving the tedium of combat. Just as PCs need to be well-balanced classwise, players benefit from having both a smooth-talking Thespian and a silent/stilled fireball-hurling Munchkin in the group.

I think there's a difference between power-gamers and munchkings, though, as do most folks I talk with. In fact, I think this whole debate is rather silly. Hardly anyone says power-gamers are a problem except when they can't be flexible enough to fit into a campaign that isn't focused on that.

Munchkins, however, by definition, ruin the fun for everyone else in the game. Therefore no, I have no tolerance for them either on the message boards or anywhere else.

I also think that there aren't very many pure roll-players or pure role-players. I've certainly never met anyone on either extreme.

And there's nothing stopping you from roleplaying a highly compotent character well.

You see, that's the problem with roleplayers - always wanting to be some utterly useless, weird a$$ bozo. Like its a challenge to roleplay a stewed fruit dish!

I suggest "Hatfields" and "McCoys".

I like Drama-Queens much better as a derogative word. We really need something that insults as well as munchkin. However, that just makes us as bad as the snotty, better-than-thou-art drama queens who *think* they are better than everyone else. In a perfect fantasy world, we could throw all the labels away (which is my preference). However, since drama-queens have to boost their egos because they are insecure, I think it's about time the munchkin revolutionaries could fire back with something as inflammatory as "munchkin". Fame and fortuen awaits the person who comes up with a better name than drama queen. And then we must post this name all over the net so that munchkins everywhere will know revenge. And _____s everywhere will know fear. Our time has come at last...

For me, it's because munchkins (in my definition) cheat.

But playing with snobs or rude people of any stripe isn't much fun.
