He does realise that he could just use polymorph other on all the group's fighters, and THEY'D kick ass, right?
Or that he could be using tenser's transformation by now, and have the hitpoints to match his form.
Or that he could have had a dire-shaping druid by now.
It sounds like it's not so much a case of the player being good, it's more a case of the rest of you being bad.
OTOH the "kicked you out of the house for ruling against him" thing would've gotten him banned from the group for a long long time. If it's a general indication of his demeanor, then it's more than just rules-knowledge that's making playing with him no fun (and judging by his lack of helping-the-partyness, that's precisely the problem - he plays so that he has fun and noone else does). Incidentally - only child, is he?

Is it also a coincidence that Tenser's transform, poly other and divine power also tend to make the shortlist of most-disliked spells in 3E? I think not.
