Munchkins?

Greetings!

Is it just me or does one munchkin force the whole group to be a munchkin? Otherwise, no other character can compete with the munchkin.

No, it doesn't have to be done but sometimes it feels that way.

I played in a one shot 16th level adventure and I had (have as I still like him) a Rogue, single classed. My highest attribute, with adjustments, was an 18 DEX. I don't think I hadn't anything less than 12 but I only had two above 16.

Some of the guys who played had attributes in the high 20s and low 30s! If it wasn't for the fact that I was playing the only rogue and had done a good job with items to help my skills, I wouldn't have been needed!

Anyway, that got me thinking about my question. Does one munchkin force all to be that way?

btw, in that same adventure was a guy who played a Sorcerer with about 3 Prestige classes so that his base save DCs for his spells was a 28 for 1st level spells. (I still don't feel bad that I gave this guy a lot of crap for an obvious min/max munchkin character.)

Just wondering what others thought of it when things like this happen.

Thanks!

Well, that doesn't happen to me. A munchkin forces me to beat him/her to a bloody pulp with a moldy stick before dumping him/her into a giant water tank filled with ravenous piranas. But then again...maybe that's just me. :D

I got your back, k. Death to any min/maxer who spoils the rest of the group's fun!

Most munchkins luckily aren't very good tacticians, though - so killing them sneakily ain't usually all that hard if you are. :D

"Munchkin" is a hateful term. It is used to ridicule those who like to play with higher stakes by those who don't. Twinks, powergamers, munchkins, or any other term that has been invented are only covers for "you aren't playing the same game I am"

If I start a game and say "I am running a FR game so we can run around and kill Elminster and his lackies" and you came to the game with the character described in the opening of the thread, I would look at you strange. It may be the most interesting character in the world, but it doesn't fit every game. I would try to explain this to you before we started so you wouldn't be put out by the other characters being at a far different power level.

The same is true of the "munchkin". It doesn't fit in a lot of games. Deep imersion roleplaying doesn't go well with "Let me add up the bonuses on that". Different type of game.

The DM should get the expectations of the game across before the game starts to prevent this. Realy, a person going too far either way makes the game less fun, but we can ignore weak characters far easier than dominating characters.

[EDIT] Shouldn't this be in the general RPG forum?

Often, yes. Still, it depends on your definition of "munchkin."

Mine is as listed above: "min/maxer who spoils the rest of the group's fun" :)

If you're the only non-munchkin, then apparently the rest of the group likes a high-powered game. To be a useful player in such a campaign, you must embrace the munchitude. This might be of some assistance.

True, but not all min/maxing is bad.

If I am going to play a one shot, I tend to play with rules and try things out. Push the bounds as much as I can, to see where they go. I figure, if this is one shot and this combination is too broken, I will dissallow it in my continuous game. But first, lets see where it goes.

When a DM doesn't tell me that the one shot is going to be a deep and moving story, with a lot of role playing, I haven't done anything wrong as a role player. The DM failed to clue me in to the game. If he did tell me and I still min/max, then I have failed as player.

This is EXACTLY why I play with point buy. It doesnt solve all the problems but it helps alot.

How does this solve anything? According to the above post they could have been using point buy as attribute genreation was never mentioned. Point buy doesn't really solve anything as far as min maxers and rules abusers go.
