Must Have DVDs

Agreed, Mog, and the Samurai films aren't the only ones. But with Criterion my experience has always been either I got a brilliant movie, or I got an okay movie with awesome extras, or I (more commonly) got both.

So I always feel like I spent my money wisely.

Sorry, TW, but the Criterion Collection editions of Hard Boiled, The Killer, and also RoboCop are long out of print. You may find them on e-bay for sale, but expect to pay an arm and a leg for them. I remember the Hard Boiled Criterion Collection edition going for $200 at one point.

thanks guys, i ended up with a 40 DVD order from deepdiscountdvd.com a bit pricey altogether, but an average of $12 per DVD a great deal (especially considering going to the movies costs $10 in NYC).

i hate to show my ignorance like this but ... what exactly is "Criterion"? i'm guessing it's a company that produced DVDs. but what else am i missing?

Big Trouble in Little China
Repo Man
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

and two i'll mention because i enjoy them and no one else i've ever met has had them:

the BBC miniseries of Pride & Prejudice
and Earth Girls are Easy.

Criterion Collection

I wouldn't worry too much about being 'ignorant' about this if you've just now started purchasing DVDs--there's no reason you would recognize the name otherwise.

Conan the Barbarian Collector's Edition gets my vote. A really wonderfully-done DVD.

The audio commentary featuring John Milius and Arnold Shwarznegger is both very funny (both men have great senses of humor) and very informative (you'll learn about the trouble the filmmakers had with both the MPAA and animal-rights activists). The disc also features high video quality, deleted scenes added back into the film (including a great conversation between Subotai and Conan as they prepare for the final battle), trailers, production stills, and an interesting documentry about the making of the film. The only weak point of the DVD is the audio quality of the movie itself; no surround sound, only stereo.

This DVD is a must-own for anybody who enjoyed Conan the Barbarian.
