Mutant Chronicles for D20?

I'll chime in from experience ... it's a pretty broken mechanic at that point. Everybody wants autofire weapons, everybody will use them.

Well almost all people who want to shoot something/somebody today and who can get their hands on autofire guns will choose that over regular firearms.

Which can be cool, I suppose, but you'll have to rearrange the balance of the game as armor and class defense become useless and Ref saves become the end all and be all.

*shrug*
Also speaking from experience (this is the mechanic we've used nearly since D20 Modern came out), we don't find that it's broken. We find that it scales nicely with people leveling. It keeps autofire dangerous at higher levels rather than diminishing returns.
On the other hand, it's EASIER for a higher level character to avoid autofire from mooks, and harder for them to avoid autofire from named villains.
For us... that's perfect.
Because honestly... to simply use an exaggerated example...
Let's say you've got a Strong 10/Martial Artist 10 (that's a BAB of 20) with (for some reason) a Dex of 23 (18 to start, and boosted at every 4th level) and appropriate feats, including weapon focus rolls a natural 19 (for a total of 46) to hit a 2nd level Fast Hero with an 18 Dex. The 2nd level Fast hero rolls a 9 (for a total of 15) on her Reflex save, and is clear.

...

I know which way looks broken to me. ;)

I understand the limitations that D20 Mod has in regards to automatic's, but as its already been pointed out, the alternative is a system that is "balanced" for guns but wonky when it comes to melee. The only system I know that seemed to work it those details (at least from my pov) was Rolemaster, but that isnt really an option I would consider (even though I am a RM fan)

Still, even with its shortcomings I might start putting some thought into a conversion of the game. Keeping in mind the need to maintain MC's unique pulp / gothic/ gritty /techno/ fantasy feel.

hmmm ... what to do next?

Umm, use the Shadowrun system? That's another reason why I like it for this style. It is dark and gritty. Great for those space marines fighting tool and nail to survive the onslaught of demons in the far reaches of spaces. :]

Except that he apparently wants it for D20... not Shadowrun.

It's like someone asking, "Hey... what kind of wine goes best with filet mignon?"
And someone answering, "Chocolate milk, of course."

I think it's more like, "Hmm, I want some liver. What kind of liver is the best?"
And my response would be, "Why eat liver when you can eat steak?"

I ran SR 1st Edition a long time ago, and I havent followed up with the recent editions, but I'll try to find a book and take a look. If I cant find one I'll just go ahead with D20.

Thanks for the tip.

Heh. I got rid of my first edition stuff when I got the third edition.
Shadowrun is a lot of fun.

That's kind of needlessly snarky don't you think?

Anyways, if we were talking about using the Interlock system from CyberPunk, then it would have to be "Why eat steak when there is a nice cup of Ambrosia over here?"

That said, my experience with SR was obviously not as good as yours - in slightly over one year of weekly games in that system we routinely saw occurances of peopel getting shot mutliple times in the head and continue fighting, as well as other occasions where people were regularly being eliminated with single shots - it really depended too much on the attacker's firearm. In the end we went back to Interlock.

I love it how this thread got kidnapped. I would agree that Mutant Chronicles would be great to convert to D20 Modern/Future. I have played the Shadowrun system for years, and I believe that their system is just as broken and unplayable at times. As for converting the Mutant Chronicles system it started out as a 'D20' based system (not DnD D20, but using D20s) but it would us a little bit of a modifications. To convert to Shadowrun you will have to totally rebalance the Mutant Chronicles system. Now if I pick up working on some of this, I would definately use the Blood and Guts 2nd ed stuff for the military units. If your heart is set on setting this up in D20 Modern give me a yell and I will help out. If you decide to go with Shadowrun good luck.
