Mutant Chronicles using D20 Modern

I haven't done this, but I think it would be pretty easy to do. That's one thing that I always liked about d20 Modern - the broad, open, nature of the classes made it very easy to mold to a variety of settings. That said, if I were to do that conversion today, I'd use Modern 20 by RPG Objects - it's essentially a re-imagined d20 Modern that trims a lot of that system's fat and addresses many of the gripes that players had about it. What's new/different:

  • Backgrounds provide a basic level in skills and a base amount of Wealth.
  • Occupations can be changed several times over the course of your career and provide Wealth, skill access, feat access, improved feats and perks.
  • Hobbies provide a basic level in a single skill.
  • Wealth still exists but is not used to roll wealth checks.
  • Basic, Advanced and Prestige Classes are gone replaced with six Core Classes.
  • Skills have been streamlined considerably and can be extensively modified by perks. Several skills have been changed or merged. Some new skills have been added.
  • Opposed skill checks are gone, replaced with targeted checks.
  • Many skill checks (such as for crafting) have been completely eliminated. The skills themselves have been folded into new skills. Your total ranks in the skill determines what you can and cannot build.
  • Many feats have been eliminated, their place taken by new skills and perks.
  • Critical hits are gone. In their place is a hit location system that modifies damage. Characters can also attempt targeted shots to improve their chances of getting a hit on a vital area.

I played a D20 Mutant Chronicles one shot at a convention and the GM just spliced 3e D&D with SpyCraft. It was a little wonky because the gun range made sword skills kinda useless. The minis looked great though!

The other odd issue was the MC knowledge of the players. Some of us came from WarZone, some from Doom Trooper, some from the MC RPG, and some from Siege of the Citadel. The effect was odd since the canon presented in each iteration of the game was somewhat different. Akin to the difference in Warhammer if you came from Fantasy Battles or from WFRP 1e or from Warhammer Quest.

I am unsure how I would convert MC, but first I would set down what is going to be "canon" in my MC campaign and see how I wanted the world to be and then mold the system to my desire. These days, I would probably use the new Gamma World because it would be quick & dirty and the danger level in combat fits the MC world nicely.

That's not to say that Modern D20 or True20 wouldn't be equally good, but I like fast PC/NPC gen and brutal combat.

There's a bunch of stuff here and there that would be hard to adapt fully.... but I have been toying with adapting a few guns from the setting for my own games.
