[Mutant Future] Raiders of the Mind Lord's Tomb

Mark Chance

Boingy! Boingy!
Yella nods, reholstering one weapon and taking up his familiar double-handed grip on his spear. "Indeed, Ivy. Forward toward the unknown."

He leads you across the room and down many steps. The journey is ponderous, especially when you must step over debris. Your guide wheezes with every step, but refuses to rest. He says it is not wise to linger in the "interzone".

Finally, you rech the bottom of the steps. You find yourself in a corridor lined with unusal pipes. They blink many colors, and emit steam in certain places. The pigman grunts in alarm when he sees them, but continues walking. Before you get too far, another four-armed pigman appears from around the corner. He clips along at a frantic pace. He sees your guide and stops. They begin conversing quickly in their language. The newcomer throws glances at each of you. His long, whiplike tail curls and uncurls with obvious tension.

Your guide turns. His face is blank.

"Problem," he says. "Very big problem with sun. You must come."

Ivy spreads her hands. "We can take a look," she offers weakly, "But I can't promise we can do anything. Depending on what that 'sun' is, it may be well outside our ability to repair or maintain."

She glances at the others still with her, then shrugs. "But all right, lead the way. Maybe we can do something."

An ozone stench fills the tunnel as you are led to the "sun". You reach a massive spherical chamber with a flickering, spitting red sphere in the center. It is burning like the flame of a match in the rain. Plants of every description cover the entirety of the chamber walls. Pigmen scramble up and down ladders, dodging flames from the sun and making desperate attempts to salvage plants.

A switchboard littered with flashing buttons and ringing klaxons is bolted to the wall next to the door. A large machine beside it vomits yellowed paper bearing ancient script. Several pigmen labor over the switches and levers, cursing and sobbing.

"You know computers?" your guide cries over the din.

Ivy had no idea what she was looking at. The basic programming she'd been supplied with prior to being boxed for shipment didn't cover anything like this. If she had to make a guess, she'd have said it was some kind of plasma in a magnetic bottle, which had been damaged by the explosion and was starting to leak.

If the power to the bottle failed, there'd be a catastrophic release of plasma all through here. If she was right.

She hurried to the instrument panel and started looking at the paper, seeing if she could work out what was happening and how to stop it.

"Get everyone away from here," she told the guide. "No time to grab anything...get as many as you can as far from here as you can. There may not be much time."

From nothing, the strange cloaked being in the golden mask is standing among all the frantic squeals and lush plant-life. She doesn't seem afraid as she throws back her cloak over the smooth flesh of her rounded fruit shoulders. In the bright illumination of the false sun, the plant dragon girl's hollow form casts scary shadows on the inside of her cloak and the walls of the chamber as the light passes strait through her.

"Well that is just...lovely, now isn't it. One could just stand here and soak this up forever."
She spreads her mint green gossamer wings to soak up as much of the warmly welcoming light as she could at once. "What miraculous force created this fabulous thing - One asks?"

The flares and smoke from the singed plants make it difficult to tell for sure, about eight of the six-limbed pig men are scaling the walls, rescuing every plant they can grab in their extra set of limbs and their prehensile tails. None heed Ivy's advice to abandon their produce.

Furug, your guide, remains beside you but the intensity of his beady eyes suggest that if he were in a better state, he would be scrambling up and down the walls with his fellows. He turns to Valla.

"The Mind Lord make the sun," he says.

Ivy and Yella join the two pigmen at the strange, bulky computer. Ivy recognizes words like "Unstable", "Error", "Shutdown" and "Severe damage" among series of incomprehensible numbers. A pig man carrying potato plants shrieks as a flame singes his back. A whiplike tail, smoking, drops onto the floor next to you. Yella delicately sweeps every switch and button with his fingers, careful not to set off anything. He senses the wiring and switches beneath the metal console, and begins to understand the machine in his simple, intuitive way. He barks quick orders to the operaters beside him and begins to work. The sun gives a final shudder, and is quenched. The room is lit only by the burning vegetation.

No one moves or speaks until Furug finally collapses. His fellows light torches, lanterns or candles and rush to his side. They begin grunting softly amongst themselves, occasionally glancing at you with awe or anger.
