[Mutants & Masterminds] Heroes of Freedom

Insight

Adventurer
What interest would there be in a "Living"-style campaign for Mutants & Masterminds similar to what's being done with the various RPGA-run campaigns?

I'm looking at the various ways in which a fan-created campaign could be organized, and I'd be interested in other gamers' reactions to such an idea.

The RPGA would have nothing whatsoever to do with the venture, since they don't want to add any new campaigns. This would be completely volunteer-organized, but would in many other ways mimic an RPGA-style campaign.

I think it'd be cool, but also a nightmare to administer. It'd be cool though if each region had its own fictional city (or maybe even real city?) that was actually in that area in the game world. I know I'd be fighting that much harder if I knew it was for my home turf. :D

It'd be cool too to have big crossover "Crisis" style events every once in a while, but that'd also be a major pain.

That's certainly one of the considerations I have to think about. Administration is going to be a challenge.

An advantage on the side of those who choose to undertake this venture would have is that MnM's popularity is still growing. It doesn't have an immense following like D&D, so the overhead is not as bad as starting up a new D&D campaign.

One of my goals as I sit down to work on this is reducing the paperwork. The Living campaigns that I have played have involved a lot of paperwork, mostly brought on by the peculiarities of the individual game systems. MnM, with its simplicity, aids in that regard, because very little tracking is necessary. Therefore, I believe that reducing paperwork is easy and essential to making this a possibility from an administration standpoint.

I thought about this, and it may work out that each region has a home city. This is similar to the way that Living Greyhawk deals with different areas of the World of Greyhawk.

My initial inclination, however, is to try to use Freedom City. This makes it much easier to produce adventures, administer the campaign, and also that Freedom City is already in the hands of many MnM players and GMs. It will ultimately be up to Green Ronin on whether or not they want to endorse my proposal and let me use Freedom City, since it is entirely within the purview of their Intellectual Property.

OK now you ARE talking crazy! :p

I know this is probably a bit premature, but I have created a Yahoo Groups discussion board for Heroes of Freedom, my tentative title for the new multi-user campaign for Mutants & Masterminds.

Please feel free to join up and speak your mind.

Seems like a cool idea. I hope it works out.

I'd also throw my support to the multi-city idea. It's a pretty common thing in comics and i think it would make "Living MnM" a lot more interesting.

Got the GREEN LIGHT !!!

Just wanted to post a quick note to let everyone know that I spoke to Chris Pramas and Steve Kenson and they LOVE my idea for Heroes of Freedom!

This is an important first step in getting this project together. I'm very happy, for obvious reasons, but this means that we have a lot of work to do to get this campaign up and running by the beginning of next year!

I'll post some more details after Origins, and I'm going to be in heavy recruiting mode for the next few months. I need adventure writers, artists, layout and design, and campaign staffers, including GMs for conventions.

Just out of curiosity, will you be using any material from the Freedom City campaign setting? If so, what region will be Freedom City?

It is going to be entirely Freedom City, so all of the stories will start there (although they may not end there!). It's not going to be like Living Greyhawk, where the campaign is divided into home regions. First of all, that's a pain for a grass-roots campaign. Second, I don't believe there's any inherent advantage to splitting into regions given the numbers of players I expect in the beginning.

Freedom City NPCs and locations will be featured prominently, although at least half of the villains will be new.
