Mutants & Masterminds --> Marvel Super Heroes?

Emphatically, NO. there was one game that echoed the simulationist sensation of Marvel heroes like Wolverine, Hulk & Dr. Strange. this was classic Marvel Superheroes by TSR.

lolwut?

Calling the Marvel universe simulationist is the funniest thing I've heard all day. I read an issue once where Magneto used his powers to pull raw ore out of the ground and fabricated an entire working modern day Lear Jet complete with functioning avionic intstruments, windows, onboard electronics, the works. All in about 5 minutes.

There is a slightly different tone and feel than the DCU, but there is NOTHING simulationist about the Marvel universe. Its a comic book universe and it operates on comic book physics. In other words, the characters can do whatever the author needs them to do.

We need a Mumm-Ra macro or emoticon for the site for thread necromancy. :)

Also, to keep it on topic, a friend of mine ran an awesome limited-shot game in the Marvel universe using M & M about 5 years back. M & M can absolutely maintain a Marvel universe feel in its powers - but the real feel of such is going to be given through the human traits of the PCs and the interactions with the NPCs. Jealousies, rivalries, fiscal insolvencies of characters, keeping a romantic date while the world falls apart around you - that's the real stuff of Marvel stories. ;)

Yeah, definitely. Marvel strives for a certain personal street level tone with their stories. Whereas DC stories tend to feel a bit more mythic in tone. I love them both. The intriguing irony is that they seem to have somewhat flipped that tone around in their recent films. Marvel has the over the top gonzo popcorn affairs, while DC, with the Nolan Bat films, Man of Steel, and Arrow is going for the more gritty "realistic" approach.

While I disagree with the premise (and I think you may be misusing the red "Kill" result), I do agree that the original TSR FASERIP Marvel RPG is awesome. I've run two big campaigns with those rules in the past few years, and will likely come back to it at some point in the next year or so. Good stuff.

name the games that allow you to "call your shot" (knock-out or kill) foes with your very first strike? Wolverine factors heavily here, along with Nick Castle/Punisher & Thing, who was prone to K.O. an opponent when the situation required it. few RPGs allow you to "call your shot" & deliver that climactic, cinematic effect you want, scene-to-scene. MSH did it & it's the reason i still use that system for my "generic universal role-playing system".

M&M is more "Golden Age", in the sense that it's near-impossible to kill or seriously harm characters with a single attack. the lack of hit points, and having a saving throw mechanic that favors high defenses, prevents this. call me simulationist, but comics simulate the real world, to a degree. using the M&M system, Spider Man or Thing or Colossus can't K.O. a foe by exerting " a little more power ". if that suits your gaming needs, then yeah, it can work for you.

i prefer knowing that if my PCs want to end a fight quickly, they can.

I'm having a hard time remembering when characters like Wolverine or Punisher manage to take out non-minion foes with one shot (something M&M allows for just fine). Usually, they have to work quite a bit harder at it. And, with the damage saves as they are in M&M, if an attack and defense are at the same power level, KO is most certainly a potential result. So I'm really not seeing the problem here.
